On Lygon Street, East Brunswick last night

From Melbourne Today"Think of Michael Blamey as your visual prompt for Melbourne." - The Guardian

*finally. on holiday…

I hope everyone had a beautiful Christmas! I've chatted with the family back home, and yes, I am jealous they had a white Christmas - Jacob and I had our first Christmas alone... with Timmy of course! It was lovely! My stay-cation started with a new van Hulst Christmas eve tradition... Tandoori Chicken that Jacob marinated for 2 days and popped on the BBQ. Very nice! We decorated our mini-tree and watched National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (one of the 2 best Christmas movies ever, only tied with A Christmas Story). We were also visited by the Christmas Huntsman... Bahhh!!!(Apologizes for the ...

Zia Teresa

It took a while to persuade Nick to walk into Zia Teresa as I think he was a little turned off by the Botticelli-esque artwork and the white table cloths that we could see through the windows.  We expected that the meal would be too expensive for a Tuesday night as it all looked a bit Toorak.  My gut feeling however was: ‘We must take the plunge and walk through those wooden doors’ and I am very glad that we did. When you walk into Zia Teresa’s you immediately feel warm and welcome.  There is a cute wooden bar in the main room and ...

Amnesty Fortnight: dinner at Rumi

Rumi116 Lygon Street, Brunswick East (map)9388 8255Okay, this is a quickie, because it's Amnesty Fortnight and I have a dinner date in a few hours. These photos have been sitting in my drafts folder since a while back, but I felt compelled to share them anyway because (a) Rumi seems, somewhat undeservedly, to have dropped off the Melbourne food blogging radar, and (b) it was such a great meal. The very generous, very delicious Rumi banquet will only set you back $40 per person - outrageously good value in my opinion. The occasion was the birthday of Beatch, my charming friend from ...

Va Piano in Brunswick East

l know we keep doing a lot of "North" cafes but they just keep popping up like mushrooms!Va Piano caught my eye weeks ago and we finally paid a visit. My partner in crime and l opted for breakfast and it was delicious! We both ordered the baked eggs and they were amazing! Cooked to perfection.Va Piano is very small and seats less than 16 - so ladies visit the "powder room" before leaving home. And in having said that, sadly there is not much room for bub either. This week l also found out a useless fact for you all.If a cafe ...

Native American Figurines

Who buys figurines of Native Americans? Fans of Westerns and Cowboy/Indian shoot ‘em up movies? Not Native Americans themselves, as these figurines are trite and rather tacky. If you are ever tempted to buy one of these, step away slowly…. In 2001, the US Commission on Civil Rights declared that such mascots and logos using Native American images were offensive and denigrating to the native population. This was followed by resolutions of the American Counselling Association and the American Psychological Association calling for the end of the use of images of Native American Indians. Figurines are generally representative objects of ...

Panettone: Va Piano II

126C Nicholson St, Brunswick EastBrunswick East's new high performer has added a wonderfully seasonal breakfast to its succinct menu: panettone with cinnamon ricotta, honey, some macerated fruit and a sprinkle of nuts, crowned with a plume of pear. It's a joyous way to enjoy this traditional festive season bread, and another example of how well Melbourne embraces European customs.A quick bit of

Anthemis Bowls

These are my new favorite things. Very small bowls (about 5cm diam) impressed with Anthemis leaves in various glazes. Delicate little things with such diversity within their surface that I can stare into them for ages. Made by Sandra McHarg.

Dear The Retreat, Sydney Road, Brunswick,I would email this to you directly, but Google tells me that the only way to contact you is by the tellingphone or MySpace. I don't do MySpace.I ate at the Retreat on Sunday afternoon and wanted to tell you how great it is that there are a number of vegan options on the menu. It certainly makes pub meals a lot easier!I also wanted to mention that I was surprised to learn that the 'Vego Curry' has fish sauce in it. Given that the title of the dish makes it appear that it's a ...

My husband and I are both artists (graphic designer/illustrator) and are seeking a secure creative space that would suit living as well as working from as we’re trying to keep overheads low. We’re neat, mature and friendly, and hoping to find a place to move into in December that would accommodate us as freelance artists. Parking is ideal, but we’re happy to have street parking if available. Prefer space that includes internet connection. Please contact us if you have anything available.

brunch @ A1 bakery

For the past few weeks, we’ve been spending our Saturday running around -amazing race style- doing inspection marathon. What a stressful activity! with all the adrenalin, finding the right address, got lost, got pissed, arguing about which way to go, catching another tram to the next house / flat..pheeww..! Each inspection only lasts 15 – 30 min, and if the property located in popular suburb and close to public transport, there always at least 10 people looking as well. I found that inspection is kinda funny in a way, you can see in people’s eyes, when they see another couple arrived ...

Monday Melbourne Roundup

Busy, two 4am days this week. Woot woot.OutThe Boys Are BackAhh Australian film, so pitch perfect, so heart wrenching, so unflinchingly real. Australian film is fucking exhausting and Scott Hicks new missive (director of Shine) is all of those things and more. It’s a beautiful film of loss, how grief makes you crazy and how your assumptions on things you take for granted can have profound impacts on the people you love without your knowledge. Beautiful, haunting film, I cried buckets. Not sure Id recommend going especially to the cinema for it, but definitely one to see. Big thanks to ...

Bar Idda

At 8pm on a balmy Wednesday evening Bar Idda was pumping. Every outside table was filled with people tucking into food and wine, inside the tables were packed and the wait staff were almost run off their feet. Thankfully, unlike so many other great Melbourne food haunts, Bar Idda does allow bookings so our meal was certain. Unfortunately, the two-sittings-a-night (6pm and 8pm)  policy meant we arrived ravenous.   Shoe horned in to the large back table, we immediately ordered some pre-drinks and nibbles while we waited for our dining companions. The Sicilian Spritzer (made of Rosso Antico, Cinzano Bianco and gassosa) was a perfect drink for a ...

Tonight at the East Brunswick Club, I ate a vegan chicken parma (featured below). This is because the vegan chicken kiev is so popular, with its parsley and buttery filling oozing out, that the non-vegans have been ordering it, too. So although it was on the specials board tonight, they had SOLD OUT. It's on the specials board, no idea for how long or how often. I had it about three weeks ago, and it was AMAZING. Really really tasty. Try it, and then give them great feedback, in the hopes that it will appear all the time. It's expensive ($20) ...

Leonidas @ Sparta Place

Now Brunswick has a statue of King Leonidas of Sparta in Sparta Place off Sydney Road. The statue has been the subject of local controversy,  it is disliked by the local traders, and created as part of the junket politics of sister cities. Petros Georgariou - King Leonidas 2009 Greek artist Petros Georgariou sculpted the bust of King Leonidas, in a retrograde and conservative nationalist-realist style. The modeling of the bust is crude and stiff. The statute’s black marble plinth, a material alien to the local area, makes it look like a tomb. Not content to leave the 2005 remodelling of Sparta ...
