Political graffiti

“It’s kinda hard to put into mere mortal words, but I guess I should say that being righteous mean you’re more or less on the side of the angels, waging Armageddon for the ultimate victory of the forces of Good over the Kingdom of Death (see how perilously we skirt hippiedom here?), working to enlighten others as to their own possibilities rather than merely sprawling in the muck yodelling about what a drag everything is.” Lester Bangs (Lester Bangs “The Clash” Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung, 1987, p226) There is a lot of political graffiti, there always has been. Graffiti was one ...

coffee: green tambourine take two

so since my review i have been back to the green tambourine to try the coffee again. it was better this time and i drank it all (it was made by a man, not the girl who made them last time) but it wasn't great. it was scalding hot, slightly bitter, and the milk was not done properly:the people who work there are very friendly and willing to please. the food looks fresh. people seemed to be enjoying themselves. oh! in particular, this is apparently a pram- and child-friendly place, so that's nice. and they use organic foods so i ...

Old World Brooches

Helen Morfesse makes brooches using Japanese tissue transfer overdecorated with lustre and underglazes. It's quite a rich opulent effect, a bit old worldy and very alluring. This is a simple example, others are decorated much more intensely.

August 14, 2010: Tiba’s Restaurant

We've long been aware of Tiba's Lebanese restaurant on Sydney Rd but our few previous attempts at visiting were all comically thwarted. It seems that every time we've thought to dine there it's been during Ramadan, and therefore impossible to secure a table after sunset. Funnier still, our recent successful visit also occurred during Ramadan, albeit at lunch time. There's far less competition for tables then. Both of us being ravenously hungry and keen to sample across the menu, we didn't spend too much time perusing the menu before deciding upon the $13 vegetarian set menu. The ...

Milkwood 2

The staff of Triple R are very lucky to have a cafe as good as Milkwood (120 Nicholson St, East Brunswick) across the road, and a number of them were enjoying the hospitality on the sunny Sunday that I paid my second visit. I ordered poached eggs and grilled ham again, since they were so good last time. Two of the elements were just as good on this occasion – the poached eggs with their brilliantly orange yolks, and the lovely salty ham. If only they had served it with thicker slices of toast, and it would have been a perfect ...

coffee : green tambourine cafe

sometimes things aren't bad, they are just not to my taste. and sometimes things are bad.*i was excited to learn that a new cafe was opening on albion street but didn't get around to visiting until today. it's got a cool name: green tambourine. i like green, i like tambourines.they have lots of green things on their menu: green eggs and ham, pea fritters...err...other things. the menu is green too. and the tops of the chairs.but the decor is unappealing, it's almost sterile. it has a real Ikea vibe to it. now, i am a melbourne wanker, but i ...

Works are progressing to upgrade the M80 Ring Road between Calder Freeway and Sydney Road. These works are being delivered by the Tulla Sydney Alliance which is a partnership between VicRoads, Thiess, Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and Hyder. As part of these works, a new bridge will be built over the Moonee Ponds Creek to the north of the existing alignment. The bridge will be approximately 250 metres long, 7 lanes wide and approximately 7 metres higher than the existing road alignment. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists during construction, the shared user paths to the north ...

From: Kate Simnett – Kate.Simnett@yarracity.vic.gov.au Hi there, On 17 August 2010, Yarra Council will undertake works at Canning and Pigdon streets, North Carlton, to restore the roundabout rules at the intersection. As you may be aware, Council changed the intersection in April 2010 to give priority to cyclists, with the aim of reducing potential conflict between cyclists and vehicles on this busy commuter route. Council has closely monitored this intersection and it is apparent that the works have not reduced the number of accidents and near–misses as had been hoped. Restoring the roundabout rules will quickly remove any confusion experienced by drivers and ...

Displays

I'm not a fan of birds in cages, but for some reason I do like bird cages. At the moment I've been amusing myself with shop displays featuring them. Above is a set of Salt & Pepper shakers by Katie Jacobs looking a bit like they'd rather be on some one's kitchen table than in that cage. Below is a set of 1970's Japanese decorative birds looking like they want to get out too - but unfortunately they're display only and not for sale. But if any one wants to give Katie's finches a good home....

Seen

My favorite feature of being involved in a creative profession is looking. Living and working in the diverse cultural community around Brunswick provides lots of visual stimulation. There are times when I spot things that inform an idea that later becomes a design and there are other times when the image remains as memory of moment. Some images are borne from the act of taking the time to record them. Recently at Otto and Spike we had the occasion to knit the last cone of one of our beautiful Woolyarns of New Zealand archive yarns. This is a wool, ...

Milkwood

A cafe that serves eggs but, no bacon? Ridiculous you might think, but Milkwood (120 Nicholson St, East Brunswick) does exactly that, and instead offers grilled ham off the bone, which I think makes a nice change. My eggs had an incredibly yellow yolk, suggesting they were very fresh, and were perfectly poached. The grilled ham was served on the toast, and Milkwood gets two thumbs up for not skimping on the bread. I also had a side of butter beans in tomato with mint, which was tasty and filling. You can also get the latter as a ‘main’, and there’s ...

Dear Moreland Cyclists, There will be a temporary road closure in Railway Place, Coburg this week to allow a crane access to the former Union Mills/McNuts site at 37-41 Munro Street Coburg The closure will occur 7am-4:30pm on Tuesday 27 July and Friday 30 July and will affect cyclists on the Upfield bike path. It was not possible to leave the 2.5m minimum width on Railway Place for bikes to use, however there is a separate detour for bikes (as opposed to cars) which will use the laneway bounding the work site. The detour will only take cyclists 35m away from the ...

*it’s been a long time coming ….

It's Official! I will be exhibiting work at the Brunswick Street Gallery along with Aida Sabic this September!I've been working on a bunch of portraits lately, mostly colour pencil work. They are based on the female protagonists in some of my favourite books. Catherine from Wuthering Heights, Mina Harker from Bram Stokers Dracula and on and on... I will admit something though. I have not had any work on display since I was about 18 years old. My senior exhibit at NFA was my last one... back in 1994!!!! So needless to say, I'm a little stressed out and a ...

Pope Joan

77-79 Nicholson St, East Brunswick According to a semi-reliable source on the interweb rhubarb is a herbaceous plant which is botanically classified as a vegetable but in 1947 a United States court decided that as it was used as a fruit it was to be classified as a fruit for the purposes of regulations and duties. It turns out that rhubarb is the food that is everything but is remembered by no one. Test my hypothesis out, ask around – everyone loves rhubarb but no one, except cafes, ever seems to buy it. After tasting Pope Joan’s banana bread with Di’s rhubarb cream Miss Tea and ...

After seeing Vetti’s review of the apple crumble at Each Peach on Lygon St, East Brunswick my girlfriend suggested we visit to try it for ourselves, and I was keen to do so. I don’t get to this area as often as I would like to even though reviews by Republic of Moreland, Words and flavours, Melbourne cafe reviews and Little eats keep reminding me of its existence. I chose scrambled eggs with pancetta on toast (above) while my girlfriend had the amazing apple crumble (below). The eggs were perfectly done and the pancetta was of high quality, but I thought ...

a minor place

ah a minor place. my local and my best. the coffee is knock-your-socks-off strong. the food is delish. the staff are lovely (yes, even surly waitress) and i couldn't ask for a better local cafe. this day we had the mumbler - with avocado instead of tomato - and the new york style bagel. it's on albion street, brunswick. a minor place has a website here.

Toasty Warm

It's raining and very cold here in Melbourne today. Dianne Collins has made these toasty woodfire bowls with celadon glaze inside, perfect for a warm infusion on a day like today.
