Political graffiti

“It’s kinda hard to put into mere mortal words, but I guess I should say that being righteous mean you’re more or less on the side of the angels, waging Armageddon for the ultimate victory of the forces of Good over the Kingdom of Death (see how perilously we skirt hippiedom here?), working to enlighten others as to their own possibilities rather than merely sprawling in the muck yodelling about what a drag everything is.” Lester Bangs (Lester Bangs “The Clash” Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung, 1987, p226) There is a lot of political graffiti, there always has been. Graffiti was one ...

coffee: green tambourine take two

so since my review i have been back to the green tambourine to try the coffee again. it was better this time and i drank it all (it was made by a man, not the girl who made them last time) but it wasn't great. it was scalding hot, slightly bitter, and the milk was not done properly:the people who work there are very friendly and willing to please. the food looks fresh. people seemed to be enjoying themselves. oh! in particular, this is apparently a pram- and child-friendly place, so that's nice. and they use organic foods so i ...

August 14, 2010: Tiba’s Restaurant

We've long been aware of Tiba's Lebanese restaurant on Sydney Rd but our few previous attempts at visiting were all comically thwarted. It seems that every time we've thought to dine there it's been during Ramadan, and therefore impossible to secure a table after sunset. Funnier still, our recent successful visit also occurred during Ramadan, albeit at lunch time. There's far less competition for tables then. Both of us being ravenously hungry and keen to sample across the menu, we didn't spend too much time perusing the menu before deciding upon the $13 vegetarian set menu. The ...

coffee : green tambourine cafe

sometimes things aren't bad, they are just not to my taste. and sometimes things are bad.*i was excited to learn that a new cafe was opening on albion street but didn't get around to visiting until today. it's got a cool name: green tambourine. i like green, i like tambourines.they have lots of green things on their menu: green eggs and ham, pea fritters...err...other things. the menu is green too. and the tops of the chairs.but the decor is unappealing, it's almost sterile. it has a real Ikea vibe to it. now, i am a melbourne wanker, but i ...

a minor place

ah a minor place. my local and my best. the coffee is knock-your-socks-off strong. the food is delish. the staff are lovely (yes, even surly waitress) and i couldn't ask for a better local cafe. this day we had the mumbler - with avocado instead of tomato - and the new york style bagel. it's on albion street, brunswick. a minor place has a website here.

July 3, 2010: Rumi II

Rumi was a real It restaurant in its first 12 months of operation and though it's no longer surrounded by quite the same hype, it's still a bustling business (and in a larger space). We considered ourselves lucky to get a Saturday night reservation just a few days in advance while an interstate friend of ours was in town. Also trying their luck were many tarriers on the night, crowding the entrance and hoping for a spot at the reservation-free communal table. The biggest disappointment of the night came early - no cocktails. I reminded myself that I'd ...

Toys Toys Toys

We've been out and about loads in the last fewweeks checking out new spots to add to the site.I've been trying to fine tune our reviews and only list cafesthat have at least three of our five requirements which are* Highchairs**Toys - Books - Crayons or Play area**Children's Menu**Changing Facilities**Room to move the Pram*l want to make your trips out with baby worthwhile andnot just throw up every cafe onto the site that l just happen to visit.Just because the staff "are lovely" doesn't really make it "baby friendly" in my book- it helps, but mums need and want the ...

Lin Onus @ Counihan Gallery

Lin Onus: Meaning of Life at the Counihan Gallery is an exhibition of prints by Lin Onus. The exhibition also traces Lin Onus’s development, his “apprenticeship” in the Northern Territories, to when he had truly found his voice as an artist. Onus’s voice is always humorous and graphically clear but when he started to combine “rarrk designs” with Western naturalism he found his unique style and vision. It is a vision that could be painting, sculpture, or prints. The early linocuts are graphically clear and show that Onus had good design skills but they lack his unique voice. His screen-prints of animals, ...

new brunswick cafe: pope joan

this morning the evil sister and i had brunch at the 6-day old cafe pope joan.it is officially a hipster-free place. however, this made me quite uncomfortable. and i felt pretty uncool. the staff were VERY chirpy and happy and eager to fill our water glasses and take our order. it was so...bizarre. i am used to having to catch my coffee as it's flung onto the table by Surly Waitress at a minor place and being snubbed by all the rude wait-staff at any place in northcote. but - it has only been a week. they'll come around to ...

June 19, 2010: Court Jester III

We've raved about Court Jester a couple of times already, having enjoyed their amazing breakfast menu. Each time we visited though, we've regretted being too early to sample their lunch menu, with Cindy particularly eyeing off the rotating cast of pierogi that they offer up.Finally visiting after 11am, I was still tempted to go back to the Brunswick Green (brekkie is an all day affair here) but instead delved into the unknown wilds of the lunch menu. Lunch is a bit meatier than breakfast, with a Polish pizza, a vegie burger or the pierogi providing the vegetarian choices. ...

Keeping it local

I love Brunswick. Brunnie is a great spot to spend some time, especially on a cold winters day, walking through Fleming park, looking at forgotten commercial art, discovering new and old buildings tucked away in factories or hidden around tight corners , having a drink at the E.B.C, Mr Wilkinson, trying to decide what wine to take home from Blackheart and Sparrows, reading the paper in a warm cafe like Sugardough – full of ‘just baked’ smells , a quaint pantry in the midst of the hustle of Lygon Street. You could also do some shopping at our Pop Up at ...

Mule – Brunswick

Delicious. A nice simple vegan sort of Saturday fry up. The fried tofu is literally that, pan fried extra firm cubes of tofu. The spinach is wilted, served with sesame seeds, almonds and some kind of delicious dressing that I really cant tell you want it is. I chose hash brown instead of an egg, served with half an avocado on gluten free toast* with a tub of delicious harissa paste. Seriously. The coffee is also delicious. Greens, you're becoming dead to me.*however just reading Kristys gluten free bread review, I'm not sure if their gluten free toast is vegan, ...

Pad Thai – Tom Phat – Brunswick

Oh Tom Phat. I was craving the Nasi Gorgeng but they don't do it at lunch (though it seems it is in roti wrap form which Clare had and loved). I've never said this before but I think this dish was too salty for me. It just missed the mark, too sour, salty, too much tamarind and the noodles were too difficult to handle. Sad fase. Tom Phat, you can be hit and miss!Hit: Tofu Scramble and Nasi Goreng and Mango Coconut Crumble.Miss: Pad Thai and Buddhas Delight.Space: a warm exposed brick and wood 8/10Service: too in different then too ...

Skin and Bone Lauren Simmonds (had) an exhibition opening Thursday 3 June at the Napier Hotel – Skin and Bone - upstairsatthenapier.org/ Lauren also had a huge piece at the Trocadero in Footscray recently which was astounding and beautiful.. her work draws you into its intriguing depths. .. The World at Large Plus i’ve just had a sneak preview of Ahmarnya Price’s latest collection. Ahmarnya’s opening at Gilligan Gallery on the 12th June, a Saturday matinee session. There’s a whole year full of diptych works that had me ...

Gorgeous art in Brunswick

Went to see Jessie Tucker’s exhibition at the Brunswick Arts Space last night. She’s made a thoroughly gorgeous set of “rare birds” – Avis Rara – in the style of trophies on the wall, with beautiful colour and design. i wish i’d taken some photos, because all the pieces sold within the first 90 minutes, and who knows when i’ll get all the way back to old Brunswick town again. An owl, a flamingo, a couple of love birds, some kind of hummingbird with a unicorn – all with lovely old world titles. My favourite was definitely the owl and i was ...

Look how far we’ve come…

Well, it seems like yesterday that we met the lovely Charlie but on May 13, 2010, my gorgeous little girl will be turning 2. Officially a big girl! Not only is she speaking in full conversation mode, 7 word sentences and doing everything she can all on her own, she has hit the 50th percentile for height for her real age and the 10th percentile for weight. She’ll always be tiny charlie to us but we are so proud of all of her achievements and love every little thing about her. Happy birthday beautiful chuckles girl. I am currently 28 weeks ...

Street Art Railway Notes

Pranksters struck at one of Melbourne’s train stations again. This time they altered a ticket machine’s instructions to dispense university degrees. The alterations used stickers of the same color and typeface, cut to fit over the existing information, it was so subtle that staff at the station didn’t notice them until informed by a confused customer. (Thanks to Jane for the photos.) Lench's blockbuster since buffed Being an appreciative observer of street art along the Upfield train line I have to comment on Lench KSA (Kickin Some Arse). His revival of the blockbuster style advertises his name clearly – what more can ...

The more people we have in the co-op the greater variety we will have in the boxes. Green Refectory

115 Sydney Rd, Brunswick 3056 VIC (03) 9387 1150 I’ve heard many good things about Green Refectory, so Juls and I decided to check it out. Loved the casual yet cosy atmosphere, with light filtering in through the back windows. A peek out the window reveals a back alley where you can dine open air. I had the Breakfast stack: a poached egg piled on top of spinach piled on haloumi piled on bacon piled on grilled tomatoes piled on a potato patty, with a drizzle of tomato chutney on the side. Yeah. By the end of it I was exploding. At ...

Monday Melbourne Roundup

BUSY!!!Eats/drinksThai Food and Culture FestivalI walked out of Bandaged before it finished so I could wolf down some food at the Thai Food and Culture festival that was going on in Fed Square. I don’t know where I bought it from but it was DELICIOUS (vegies and cashews), having grown up in Sydney, I really miss good Thai food.Tom Phat I had the famous tofu scramble again, it wasn't at its best but it was still amazing.OutA Single ManA strange film, highly awkward and half baked. The first half of this film was amazing, the second half, cringe worthy. I ...

After doing an overnight shift I wheeled my bike out into the oppressive morning air.  It was cool, but the humidity was high, leaving a wet sheen on any car parked out in the open.  I stripped back down to my tshirt and pedalled off into the morning.  By the time I'd ridden the 20 minutes home I was sweating like the proverbial!I jumped into the shower, then bed, and was asleep just after 9.30am.  I woke up around 2pm to hear thunder rolling about in the distance.  I peeked out from under my eye mask (imperative for those who ...

696 Ink Opening

I thought that I was going to the opening of a tattoo parlor with a few paintings on the wall. The sinks for the tattoo parlor part have yet to be installed so the only ink was on a few drawings – it was just a gallery opening. 696 Ink is a new gallery in the same location on Sydney Road as 696. To the casual observer it may not even look like a new gallery. Some of the same artists are on the wall. The front gallery is still hung salon style although the larger paintings make it look less ...
