From: Kate Simnett – Kate.Simnett@yarracity.vic.gov.au Hi there, On 17 August 2010, Yarra Council will undertake works at Canning and Pigdon streets, North Carlton, to restore the roundabout rules at the intersection. As you may be aware, Council changed the intersection in April 2010 to give priority to cyclists, with the aim of reducing potential conflict between cyclists and vehicles on this busy commuter route. Council has closely monitored this intersection and it is apparent that the works have not reduced the number of accidents and near–misses as had been hoped. Restoring the roundabout rules will quickly remove any confusion experienced by drivers and ...

Dear Moreland Cyclists, There will be a temporary road closure in Railway Place, Coburg this week to allow a crane access to the former Union Mills/McNuts site at 37-41 Munro Street Coburg The closure will occur 7am-4:30pm on Tuesday 27 July and Friday 30 July and will affect cyclists on the Upfield bike path. It was not possible to leave the 2.5m minimum width on Railway Place for bikes to use, however there is a separate detour for bikes (as opposed to cars) which will use the laneway bounding the work site. The detour will only take cyclists 35m away from the ...
The Moreland City Council – Proposed Budget 2010/11 recommends a disappointing $3.49 per head expenditure on bike infrastructure. This is a significant decrease on previous years and much less than the modest $5 per head recommended by Bicycle Victoria. If you think that the Council should spend more on cycling, now is the time to send a submission to the Council. Details are available on the council website. Note that submissions are accepted until Friday 9 July 2010. It would be a good idea to send a copy of your submission to your local Councillor. Their contact details and profiles are available here. It might ...

1: Kingfisher-Harrison-Albion path widening 2: Murray Road Bridge Repairs The attachment shows the area affected around CERES. The detour route has been chosen to avoid sending cyclists on to busy Nicholson Street. Cyclists have been observed taking this route. Follow detour signs. Hopefully the closure won’t be as long as is shown on the map but the works are weather dependent. The other closure is under Murray Road. The bluestone balustrade on the bridge above needs to be repaired after a car ploughed into it and knocked out a lot of (big, heavy) bluestone flagstones. Scaffolding will be erected under the bridge but ...
Dear Moreland BUG members, More people than ever are riding in Coburg, Brunswick and throughout the inner north of Melbourne. It’s great to see so many cyclists on the road. However, with the days getting shorter it’s time to check your batteries and upgrade your bike lights so you can ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ cycling this winter. To legally ride at night, your bike needs a bright front and rear light (visible from 200m) and a rear reflector. Moreland Council and local bike shops are working together to make it easy for you to upgrade your lights. Throughout the month ...
The Upfield bike path has been registered for Clean Up Australia Day, Sunday 7 March from 10 am – 12 pm! Tammy, the Environment Education Officer at Moreland Council, is organising a clean-up along the bike path between Albion Street and Reynard Street and she’s hoping some other cyclists who regularly commute along the path may be interested in helping with the clean up. This is a public event, anyone is welcome. The meeting point on the day is Albion Street just east of Anstey Station. Gloves, bags etc will be provided. Details of this and other sites are on the Clean Up ...
Courtesy of Chris Anderson and Nicholas Elliot, here is the route for the Brunswick East Shimmy, and work that needs to be done to improve the route:
News from Kylie Huard, Strategic Transport Planner, Moreland City Council: Council has erected a temporary detour in place on the Upfield path near Duckett Street due to an unsafe factory wall abutting the path. The detour keeps being removed which is endangering all path users. Council has issued a notice to the building owner to install water filled barriers across the path with proper detours in place, however due to the holiday period and the building owner overseas, it has been difficult to get action. We are hoping that the barriers will be installed tomorrow, with a detour in place via Breese ...
News from Kylie Huard, the Strategic Transport Planner at Moreland City Council: Just wanted to let you know that we’ve been successful in our application for a $160,000 grant for the East Brunswick shimmy. This brings our bicycle budget to over $1 million this year! The route links Canning Street to Barrow Street via East Brunswick, and consists of a variety of treatments including refuges across Brunswick Road and Glenlyon Street, contraflow lanes, path widening and surface improvements and wayfinding. I just wanted to thank the BUG for their support with our submission.

Wednesday 14 October 2009 is National Ride to Work Day, a day to celebrate cycling. Across Australia, work places and community groups will host Ride to Work Day breakfasts to reward people who choose the healthy commute. Last year Moreland City Council hosted a community breakfast in Victoria Mall which attracted around 100 cyclists. This year is going to be even bigger with community breakfasts in three locations across Moreland. 1. Capital City Trail: Velo Bike Hub – Cnr Nicholson Street and Capital City Trail If you head down Nicholson Street or the back streets of Brunswick East, be sure to stop at the ...
Some good news: On 8th July the Moreland Council adopted the 2009/10 budget with the proposed $820,000 spend on cycling intact. BUG is extremely pleased to see an increased expenditure compared to last year’s reported spend of $711,000, particularly given that this increase was approved in a tough economic climate and in a budget where rate increases were reduced significantly. I think this great outcome is testament to the strength of the ever-growing cycling community in Moreland. The BUG will be working hard to make sure the cycling spend continues to grow over the coming years, to help Moreland realise its full ...
The Moreland BUG has just recently received the draft document for the options study, survey and design of “On Road Bicycle Path Infrastructure” in Brunswick by Cardno Grogan Richards for the Moreland City Council. Have a read of the documents and tell us what you think!
The Moreland Bicycle User Group is due to meet this Thursday 25th June 2009. The monthly Moreland BUG meeting will be held at the Browns Corner Hotel (corner of Bell St and Sydney Road, Coburg) following the conclusion of the council meeting. The group will hold the meeting in the dining/bistro section of the hotel. Keep an eye out for a group of people with bicycle helmets.
It’s been brought to my attention that this month’s BUG meeting coincides with the Council Budget submissions hearing, which will be held at Coburg Civic Centre from 6pm, Thurs 25th June. So the committee has decided that we will not hold a formal BUG meeting this month, but that instead we will encourage as many people as possible to come along to the submissions hearing. Even if you don’t wish to speak, it’s great to have a good strong show of cyclists there – it shows councillors that there is a big and active cycling community in Moreland. Afterwards, those who are ...
