Dear Moreland BUG members, More people than ever are riding in Coburg, Brunswick and throughout the inner north of Melbourne. It’s great to see so many cyclists on the road. However, with the days getting shorter it’s time to check your batteries and upgrade your bike lights so you can ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ cycling this winter. To legally ride at night, your bike needs a bright front and rear light (visible from 200m) and a rear reflector. Moreland Council and local bike shops are working together to make it easy for you to upgrade your lights. Throughout the month ...

Dear all, The Moreland BUG’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 22nd October 2009, in place of our normal monthly meeting. One of the purposes of the meeting is to elect a committee of management for the next year. I invite and encourage all BUG members (which includes all subscribers to this email list) to consider nominating for a position on the BUG committee. As someone who has held a role on the Committee since its inception, I can recommend it as a great way to be active in a fantastic community group, and to contribute to better outcomes for ...
During 2009 I have been building what I think is now the largest collaborative blogging project in Australia. I’m really excited to have published a series of 10 local news sites for inner city Melbourne. The final two, for the inner west (Flemington, Footscray, Kensington, Seddon and Yarraville) and the inner south east (South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor, Toorak, Armadale and Malvern), are now live. I have some minor improvements to make, and a few extra suburbs to add to the sites, but they are now all running the current version of WordPress and all have the latest version of the FeedWordpress aggregation plugin, ...
It’s been brought to my attention that this month’s BUG meeting coincides with the Council Budget submissions hearing, which will be held at Coburg Civic Centre from 6pm, Thurs 25th June. So the committee has decided that we will not hold a formal BUG meeting this month, but that instead we will encourage as many people as possible to come along to the submissions hearing. Even if you don’t wish to speak, it’s great to have a good strong show of cyclists there – it shows councillors that there is a big and active cycling community in Moreland. Afterwards, those who are ...
In my ongoing project of building local news sites for inner city suburbs, I’ve contacted over 150 Melbourne bloggers and amateur content creators who publish blogs or dynamic sites with content management systems that provide RSS or Atom content feeds. As individuals, these citizen journalists focus on their chosen topics or niches. Together, their output provides the most diverse and prolific discussion of life, art and business in the areas represented by the local news sites. The location based content published by commercial print media is trivial in comparison. The most popular topic by far is food: eating out at restaurants ...
I have completed the initial phase of my plan to build local news sites for the inner city suburbs of Fitzroy and North Fitzroy, Carlton and North Carlton, Brunswick and East Brunswick and Collingwood and Abbotsford. I’m in the process of contacting over 100 Melbourne based online content creators and publishers and asking them to add suburb categories, tags or labels to their posts that are about events or experiences in those suburbs. About a quarter of the sites I am contacting already had, or have recently added, suburb metadata. Almost everyone who has responded has been keen to contribute. I have ...
