Long time no blog…

It has been a really long time since I made a post. But that doesn't mean that I stopped eating! Far from it, its the best time of year for eating, and believe me, I've done well. I got really busy finding a new place to live, moving into the new house, starting a new job, surviving christmas and starting a new year!  So as well as my memory serves me, I will attempt to wrap up of the places I have been and the things I have seen....The move has bought me within walking distance to Banda Parte` Pizza. ...

Australia Day

The idea of Australia Day makes me feel vaguely unwell: the thought of yobbos with Aussie flags and cans of VB clasped tightly in their hands staggering around the streets. So here I am, hiding out at work, and hoping it will soon all be over. But despite disturbing reports coming out of this country about the way we treat aboriginals, Indian students and refugees, among others, there's gotta be some good news, right? Well here are some of the best things to come out of Australia recently - fiction, art, history - take your pick. And while your waiting for the snags to cook up on the ...

It's Australia Day today. As our national day of celebration, it acts as a post for all sorts of flags. Once, in more innocent times - or at least, in the days when White Australia was a harmless nationalistic masthead that merely signified cutting off the pigtails of Chinese goldminers - it meant the Land of the Long Weekend was nearing the end of its summer hols. The Australian Worker returned

Today my recently Melbourne-relocated Sydney friend commented that Melbourne seems to have a particular fascination with Spanish cuisine which wasn’t evident in the Sydney dining scene. I can’t vouch for whether that’s actually true or not, but tonight I found yet another cool restaurant/bar serving Spanish-inspired food. And it was muy bueno. Markov Place is the perfect Melburnian space – an unadorned concrete frontage hides a cool front bar and more. The bar reminded me of shadowy 60s vintage pictures of coiffed women perched on cocktail chairs, profiles silhouetted against the mirror. But walk in a little further down the corridor ...

Public transport social capital not dead

A couple of weeks ago Tim Watts got a lot of coverage (here’s the Club Troppo version) for criticising the lack of response – from himself, and from others – to an incident on a tram, where a beggar started threatening and racially abusing a group of young Asian people. Like everyone else on the tram, he felt intimidated. He said the ‘inadequacy of the police response has created a climate in which people are fearful of speaking out’. While the incident I observed on the number 96 tram this morning didn’t have a racial element, it did show that not ...

What with living and working in the neighbourhood, I must have walked by Toki dozens of times without paying it any attention. Then That Jess Ho posted a picture of their 'Lucky 7' and I paid attention. I stopped by Toki for a Friday night dinner with a couple of friends and found the vego options pleasant, if not inspiring - mostly I was just disappointed not to see the Lucky 7 on the menu. It's actually a permanent fixture on their lunch menu, so this week I craftily steered a group of colleagues there at midday. There ...

The Swan Thieves is the much-anticipated new novel from the author of the international bestseller, The Historian. When Robert Oliver, a renowned painter, attacks a famous canvas in the National Gallery of Art, psychiatrist Andrew Marlowe is intrigued and takes him on as a patient. But the seemingly random act of violence is a mere scratch on the surface of something altogether more mysterious. Told through the narratives of the psychiatrist and each of the women in Robert Oliver’s ...

Summer Reading

image from New York Times All the guides are out and everyone has a best-of list, but what have we actually been reading over the break? When I asked around the shop this morning, this is what I found: Ruth raved about The Wasted Vigil by Nadeem Aslam, a story of intersecting lives lived in the shadow of the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan that is both beautiful and darkly compelling. Sharon agreed with the great reviews being received by Colum McCann for his latest novel, Let the Great World Spin, that explores the character and politics of seventies America, through the act of a high-wire artist crossing the air between ...

La Latteria coming soon to Carlton

A new food business that is soon to open, La Latteria on Elgin St, describes itself as a ‘mozzarella laboratory’. Hmmmm. Is it raising the stakes in the game of having the most pretentious name? Ch…ch…ch…changes

Cafe Pinocchio would like to thank all our customers who have been so supportive throughout the past year, enduring our renovations in November.  The new look cafe is headed up by the La Marzocco in the window, that reduces St Ali’s espresso blend to liquid gold, shot after shot after shot…and complimented by our new summer menu, combining customer favourites with new Hungarian specialty dishes such as Toltott Kaposzta (Hungarian stuffed cabbages in sauercream sauce) and Retes, Hungarian strudel with sweet or savoury fillings, changing daily.

Lisa Dempster has written an excellent article on I eat I drink I work exploring the intricacies of the coffee surcharge, from decaf to mocha to - the main interest of this writer - soy milk. I have always hated but accepted with grumpy surliness the soy surcharge imposed by almost every coffee shop, but Lisa's interviews with various coffee vendors has shown that soy really does cost extra, and despite the call that the extra cost should be averaged out over all beverages, the imperative of the business owner to, you know, make a proft from their business makes ...
