Green vote surge in Federal Election

While we still don't know who will be our Prime Minister, one thing is clear - the Greens have been the big winners in this election.Adam Bandt, Sarah Hanson-Young, Bob Brown and Richard Di Natale. Photo: AAPHere in the seat of Melbourne, Adam Bandt won his party's first ever lower house seat (in a general election) with a massive 13% increase in the Green primary vote (to a total of 36%) and a 10% swing from Labor to Greens two-party-preferred. Nationally the Greens gained about 11.5% of the primary vote, an increase of almost 4% from last election, by far ...

Where to find Sunday Roast in Melbourne?

Now that the weather is starting to cool I have decided that the time has come to find the best places for a Sunday Roast in Melbourne.  So I ask you out there in the world if you can please respond to this post with any recommendations.  Also let me know if they have live music on Sundays because that is an added bonus.  I am going to try a different place every Sunday until I am satisfied that I have found the winner and then I will be content to sit back with my big fat pregnant belly and ...

HOT Chat: Akisa from BeautySwatch

You may remember that at the Nuffnang Christmas party I met Akisa, the brains behind a cool beauty website called BeautySwatch. I liked her idea so much (a huge colour library containing swatches for thousands of lipsticks) I thought you might be interested to hear more about Akisa and her work with BeautySwatch. Hi Akisa, can you tell me a little bit about your background? I’m a corporate rat by day and BeautySwatch editor by night – I have no affiliations with the beauty industry but do have a love for beauty products and the way they make you feel when you transform ...

The first thing we did with my family, of course, was go in hunt of some noodles to share. We wanted to go to Idea Fine Foods for their excellent combination of CNY and noodles but, alas, they have closed! Warm and hungry and slightly grumpy, we turned around and went to the Thai restaurant across the road, Sawasdee. Up the stairs we found the mezzanine busy, but were quickly seated even without a reservation. Our waiter claimed that there was no fish sauce or shrimp paste in the vegetarian curry, so we took him at his word and ordered ...

Long time no blog…

It has been a really long time since I made a post. But that doesn't mean that I stopped eating! Far from it, its the best time of year for eating, and believe me, I've done well. I got really busy finding a new place to live, moving into the new house, starting a new job, surviving christmas and starting a new year!  So as well as my memory serves me, I will attempt to wrap up of the places I have been and the things I have seen....The move has bought me within walking distance to Banda Parte` Pizza. ...

Lisa Dempster has written an excellent article on I eat I drink I work exploring the intricacies of the coffee surcharge, from decaf to mocha to - the main interest of this writer - soy milk. I have always hated but accepted with grumpy surliness the soy surcharge imposed by almost every coffee shop, but Lisa's interviews with various coffee vendors has shown that soy really does cost extra, and despite the call that the extra cost should be averaged out over all beverages, the imperative of the business owner to, you know, make a proft from their business makes ...

My husband and I are both artists (graphic designer/illustrator) and are seeking a secure creative space that would suit living as well as working from as we’re trying to keep overheads low. We’re neat, mature and friendly, and hoping to find a place to move into in December that would accommodate us as freelance artists. Parking is ideal, but we’re happy to have street parking if available. Prefer space that includes internet connection. Please contact us if you have anything available.

In recent months I’ve written critiques of a series of different websites, including traders’ associations, local guides and more local guides. This post will examine and compare the 8 local government sites (listed below) that cover approximately the same geography as the 10 local news sites I publish for inner city Melbourne. Councils deliver many essential services to ratepayers and local residents, such as building roads and operating libraries, but they don’t identify the delivery of news and information as an essential community service or devote adequate attention to it. Their sites are usually poorly designed and irregularly updated and are ...

Design Studio and Storage Space Wanted

Looking for a studio space within a reasonable distance to the city for one architect and one fashion designer. Looking to share the space and amenities with others. No furniture required but space would need to be big enough to have at least two large desks and bookcases etc. In addition to this we are looking for a secure storage space or lock up garage attached or close by. The area of the office space depends on the environment, however the storage ( if included ) would need to be around 20sqm.  The attached storage would be good but not essential. As I reported recently, the 10 Melbourne local news sites I have established are all now receiving regular contributions from diverse sources. Each site receives sufficient content to be considered a viable project. It’s now time for the next planned stage of the project. From their inception I have planned to find collaborators to work on the sites as editors, curators and publishers as well as content creators. In time I hope I can find volunteer editors and publishers for each of the sites so they can receive further development from a dedicated member of the community. I realise that the ...

let us recap

(photos: beers and delicious fries, aoli and olives at Little Creatures)Sorry readers - I have not posted in over a month, all I can do is try to explain, recap and hope to update more often. It is not as if I haven't eaten well, because I have. In fact, I've been eating and drinking so well over the last month and a half that A and I have decided to join forces and compact the fat together! In August, you could say I was 'between houses', a couple I know, recently relocated to Melbourne so I offered them my house for ...

Where to find the recommended cocktail bars

If you want to go to a great cocktail bar in Melbourne, try some of the places recommended by everyone I talked to on Episode 6. Ah, such is the lot of a soy drinker. Used to being slugged a surcharge for our soy drinking at every turn, this earns grizzles and grumbles but we usually succumb to our caffeine cravings and ask for an extra-large cup anyway. It is my understanding that a coffee loyalty card entitles the bearer to one free coffee after a certain number are purchased. Some restrictions may apply, if published on said card, but in general the coffee purveyor accepts that in exchange for the repeat business of their customers, a small loss may be incurred ...

10 local news sites in inner city Melbourne

During 2009 I have been building what I think is now the largest collaborative blogging project in Australia. I’m really excited to have published a series of 10 local news sites for inner city Melbourne. The final two, for the inner west (Flemington, Footscray, Kensington, Seddon and Yarraville) and the inner south east (South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor, Toorak, Armadale and Malvern), are now live. I have some minor improvements to make, and a few extra suburbs to add to the sites, but they are now all running the current version of WordPress and all have the latest version of the FeedWordpress aggregation plugin, ...

FOI on food hygiene in the City of Yarra

I find it ridiculous in the age of radical transparency being brought forth by the ubiquity of online information that data paid for and owned by citizens is kept from citizens by out of touch governments. I believe that taxpayer funded data must be freely available to the public. A good example is the information gathered by local governments during their food hygiene inspections of restaurants. We the ratepayers pay for this work to be undertaken to ensure food business prepare and serve food safely and hygienically. We want to know the results of the inspections and prosecutions so we can ...

I regularly read the City of Yarra website to find information about local services and to discover new local events. The more I read it, the more frustrated I get with how out of date it is. I’m in the mood for a whinging rant but I’ll also give them some free advice about how to create a modern site that meets the needs of the community. Problem: the site is designed to be viewed only in Microsoft Internet Explorer. It looks crap in other browsers and creates an inferior user experience. The City of Yarra website as viewed using Microsoft Internet ...

The Melbourne Dossier: Bridget Farmer

Today we are sharing the first of what will hopefully be an ongoing series of interview/quick questions with Melbourne locals. We can't promise it will be regular, or even that it will be every week, but we hope to try and get inspired by other people's favorite Melbourne places.First up is Bridget Farmer, the artist behind Bridbird - you may have seen her felt brooches or etchings at numerous markets, galleries or shops around Melbourne. If not be sure to head over to her website or blog to have a look, or drop by her etsy store where you can ...

broccoli is a political weapon

I’ve been thinking about whether to post this for some time. I believe in free speech, but whether I should be seen to promote (and thus be accused of implicitly approving of) speech I strongly disagree with is another matter. In general, I think that sharing information about the local community allows the community to better understand itself. So, despite my misgivings about drawing attention to a group whose politics I find deeply suspect, residents of the City of Yarra should know that a national-anarchist group has established itself in the area, at least according to its own media. It’s difficult to ...
