ABC Gallery : 127 Campbell Street Collingwood 4th March : AmeriKKKa “The Intruder” – Roger Corman 1961 Cormans’ only “serious” film and William Shatners’ screen debut gives a rare glimpse into the artistic heights that both could have continued on if this film hadn’t been a box office flop. Shatner is electrifying as a White Supremacist provocateur stirring a Pro-Segregationist Southern township into violence against a state enforced, integrated education system. A tense and ugly vision of mob psychology, as well as the demagogues who put it to effect.. What makes this film completely unique is the usage of an actual small ...

Fitzroy/Collingwood seems to be the hotbed of social enterprise businesses in Melbourne (see my review of restaurant Charcoal Lane), and in late 2009 another one opened around the corner from me – The Social Studio. The Social Studio is a non-profit fashion studio space staffed by approximately 20 young members of Melbourne’s refugee community and overseen by the lovely artist Grace McQuilten. I think the value and purpose of The Social Studio is best articulated on their website: The main barriers faced by newly arrived members of the community are unemployment, isolation and difficulties accessing education and training. The Social Studio addresses ...
After having a drink at The Fox with the crew at PBSfm, the second stop of the night was at The Gem, watched the band above while drinking a pot of draught (I'll have to check Beat to find out who they are). Then it was off to Yah Yahs to see Hugo Race and The True Spirit play.Managed to catch support Bad Orchestra(pictured above), but missed out on Celery. Very pleased to catch this band, plenty of guitar, taking you somewhere, with some great female vocals thrown in. Bad Orchestra is a band I would definitely see again and ...

I was disappointed with my trip to Trippy Taco this time. Everyone banged on about the Tofu Asada taco/burritos which I tried but didn’t like it as much as the usual fare I eat there. The tofu was lovely and smoky but my meal was also cold by the time it came out. I think I prefer the usual mix of beans or perhaps I just cant tell because it was cold. It was still delicious but I would have liked it hot! It was nice to snuggle in there on a such a rainy night though. The staff are ...
This Provenance Food & Wine Co. degustation event was simply too tempting to miss! Six courses with a summer berry focus! Sadly, the Edinburgh Gardens venue did not work out, so we dined on the faux lawns at Provenance. Our afternoon of summer berries began with warm ciabatta bread, strawberry infused olive oil, and raspberry salt. Next, chicken and strawberry skewers with rocket salad, followed by venison skewers with a blueberry sauce, on a bed of celeriac. Desserts included summer pudding, vanilla pannacotta with berry compote, and blueberry tiramisu. We drank a 2005 Point Leo Road Blanc de Noir (Methode Champenoise), which matched the plates perfectly! ...
There was a time when the grungy Grace Darling was the kind of pub which you’d cross the road to avoid. Now the pretty brick and stone building has been given a good clean-up and on a sunny day you’ll find the pub full of youngsters spilling out on the pavement tables and filling up the glamorous inside bar. So the crowd inside the pub’s atrium dining room was a bit unexpected – it seems to attract an older, quarter-acre block, class of diner. Maybe the youngsters go to the Grace Darling to drink, not to eat, which would be a ...
Three Bags Full 56 Nicholson St, Abbotsford (Cnr Nicholson & Mollison Sts) (T) 9421 2732 website urbanspoon foursquare (PS. Don’t go to www.threebagsfull.com.au like I did, they’re suppliers and manufacturers of top quality sheepskin and equestrian products. Right.) Three Bags Full is the new cafe from the team that brought you Liar Liar in Hawthorn and based on those credentials (and not much else it seems but word of mouth) some serious serious buzz has been generated. I’d been hearing stories about this place packing out regularly. Nick from Broadsheet had to wait for 20 minutes in line for a seat six days ...

My one and only photo from the day, taken from the street outside my house . . . complete with light leaks and a church cross. I'm always amazed at how these pilots maneuver with such synchronicity while painting the sky with jet streams. Thanks to the most recent followers for signing on and for all those that have visited. The blog is getting close to 1,500 clicks!X
I have a very cool friend who is the barista at Pearl Oyster. He also comes around a lot and is the fill-in girlfriend for my housemate. It makes sense to me. On a particular day when we were all very over hung and in need of resuscitation, I dragged the boys to Proud Mary. I have never eaten breakfast here, but it was pumping harder than a body-dysmorphic body-builder from Brisbane, and probably brought out as many plates of eggs as one would eat. And never ever let me train on a 35degree day, after a heavy night of drinking, ever again. I ...

197 Smith St Fitzroy Phone: 9417 2438 It had been too long since I had last Peking Duck. Old Kingdom is a Melbourne institution, where Peking Duck virgins should go for the at-table theatre as much as for the duck itself. After the first time, though, the brash spiel of the servers becomes a little tiring, so we were thankful when the waiter just carved the duck and left us to our own devices.

Okay, so you've seen these posted on the blog before, and two have been on flickr for several weeks, but I've finally gotten around to adding them to my etsy & made it stores. I see these well-established etsonions (successful etsy sellers) with 100+ items listed in their store and it makes me weep! I'm one print shy from 20, so I'm getting there oh-so-slowly. I move like the hare but feel like I get there as slow as the tortoise. Anyway, enough of that... And all taken in my beloved Collingwood... I'm doing the usual original-size prints - called 3x4 but ...
What does Feb 23 mean for Melbourne? On this day 34 years ago, AC/DC filmed It’s a Long Way to the Top on a flatbed truck in Swanston St. This year, your music needs YOU on Swanston St. Make a sign, bring your instruments. Musos, bands, and yes, a flatbed truck will be there too. Demand government support for live music! Read more at Faster Louder (and see the AC/DC footage) Filed under: collingwood, hi-fi, rant-o-rama
We'll be providing one-on-one tutoring for kids every Wednesday from February 17th until March 24th. Interested in volunteering in Melbourne after work? Want to help children of all ages and diverse backgrounds in a supportive and inclusive environment? We'd love to hear from you.
I managed to hang out with my sister a couple of weeks ago. I like my sister. She understands my stupid humour and has much of the same…but it is more polite and less crass. We are same-same-but-different. Um, don’t think like that. Gross. The point is, I like her and her eating efforts. Although, on this certain trip, she disappointed me in her inability to finish her main. You see, she rarely is defeated by food. When she was in high school she could eat a whole family pizza on her own after school and come home and have 2 servings of dinner and still ...
NYE/NY for 2010 was an interesting one. It went for a little too long (ahem, 4 days), I caught up with a bodybuilder, ended up at more parties than I can remember, had an intermission at the Melbourne Hospital, watched a few too many movies and hung out with the winner of the Australian Apprentice. I am sure more happened, but be glad that I remember this at all. I also had a party with my housemate where I deboned 18 quails, made about 50 Lt of sangria, which ended in my housemate and I standing over my giant stockpot with a ...
Oh my God! The Lumiere and other cinemas have closed, leaving only the megaplexes that screen nothing but the same few films under ever changing titles. Our only hope is to plant the surviving seeds and see if they take.Dvds projected on to a white wall in a gallery rich with the paintings of Milos Manojlovic who will serve anything from a cappucino to a shiraz or scotch at decent prices and a word or two of worldliness. Stay for opinions, music and imbibing after the film. Go on, dare ya!Oh my God 2! For anyone who revealed their poor ...
