GALLERY 1Foyer SpaceSYSTEMS TO POINTINGCorinna BerndtThe objects I collect and photograph, or use in my installations are fake, kitsch artefacts, Ifind at op-shops, like plastic diamonds, christmas decoration and plastic roses. Their tackinesseasily stirs my imagination, and I am interested in creating some kind of logic between objects. My work is mainly driven by the idea of spreading microcosms and the wish to establish a sort ofpseudo-science between groups of found objects.
Space APHYSETER FABLEJulian SmithIn Physeter Fable; the bloated carcass of a Sperm Whale is a child’s plaything. Dogs must be kept on a leash lest they be decimated by gastric juices. One must learn that laying claim to something is pointless without knowing how to plunder it. Boys may not like being bleached or burnt but their friends find it hilarious. The emergence of a massive dork may offend some viewers. These paintings on paper, by emerging artist Julian Smith, elude as much as they elucidate the narrative details. The result is a skewed story with lessons implied but unclear. ...
Space BNEW WORKS BYNatasha CordasicNatasha’s practice engages personal history with the propaganda of nationalism and commercialisation. She creates images and uses materials in such a way to generate a friction between properties or production and symbolism.
Project roomRITUAL GARDENNoriko NakamuraNoriko is a Japanese-born artist based in Melbourne. She believes that spirits in animals and inanimate objects are a natural part of ordinary life. This interest in Shinto (and other) primitive religions and her personal experience influences installation works that utilize various media. They include organic materials, domestic objects and DIY items.
GALLERY 2GOLDEN MOUNTAINRenato Colangelo - Mark Connors - David van Royen - Vivian Cooper Smith - Ian TippettGolden Mountain is an exhibition by five Melbourne photographers exploring the concept of imagination. In spite of the complexity of the theme two fundamental questions form the basis of the inquiry.“What is ‘imagination’ and what part does it, or did it, play in my life?”The five photographers meet monthly to discuss these questions and develop an exhibition. It is a process of review and critique but also one of bonding and inspiration. The result is an exhibition that breaks traditional notions of authorship by presenting ...
GALLERY 3Fear of a Tech PlanetAnthony Sawrey - Kieran Stewart -Nick Waddell - Ross TaylorIn this exhibition, 5 artists examine how the presence of techno phobia influences and informs their works, from a gleeful embrace of uncertainty to one of cautious optimism or suspicion. From ancient times to the present day, the emergence of new technologies has produced both anxiety and exhilaration in the cultures affected by it. Such developments can upset our habitual familiarity with society and the environment, making the very ground beneath us appear to melt into air.Consequently it brings about a broad range of reactions; from a ...

COME AND SEE (Ellem Klimov USSR 1985)Farm boy Florya tries to make it through each day intact as the blitzkrieg eviscerates the land and people around him. There are moments of fascination in the great Russian forests, even some eroticism, but these are fleeting as the nazi machine finds its way into every last quiet place. Still a teenager at the end of the flim, Florya seems to have aged a hundred years as he confronts an image of the cause of this hell on earth. A film ...
As the Gallery will be in use on August 27 I am going to have to alter the Winter Part 2 Program. I am removing the late entry BILLY LIAR (for postponement, not cancellation) and moving COME AND SEE forward to the 20th of August. Anyone who has picked up a flier will need to note this. Meantime, please enjoy KURONEKO (details below).
KURONEKO (Kaneto Shindo Japan 1968) A rural cottage by a wood. One by one a band of samurai emerge from the trees and converge on the house. The two women inside are settling down to a meal. The samurai enter. Five minutes later in screen time the house is burnt to the ground and the strangely intact women's bodies lie lifeless in the ashes. Some cats, strays and considered vermin in the medieval Japanese setting, slink by and lick the blood off the necks of the victims. Fade. A strapping young samurai riding alone at night is stopped by the sight of ...

HEARTLESS (Phillip Ridley UK 2010) Jamie, young and good looking but rendered cripplingly shy by the great red birthmark that spreads across half his face, works as a professional photographer. He keeps the shutter going after hours, finding visual treasure in his crumbling area of town. One day, shooting a derelict house that has caught his eye, he sees something he can't quite make out in the window. Developing it later (he's romantically committed to film photography rather than digital) he finds something that looks like it escaped from a Hieronymous Bosch painting of Hell. He goes back later to ...

Foyer SpaceTHE TRAITORJohan OervergaardThe Traitor is a powerful sculptural installation presented in the foyer space of the gallery involving the transformation of an iconic object through a casting process done in-situ.'The concrete process of making the cast sets up a reductive incongruity with it’s conceptual rendering'.Johan Oevergaard
Space APERSISTENCE OF VISION - PART 1Simon O'CarriganPersistence of vision is a term that describes the ability of human perception to interpret movement when watching a series of rapidlyflashing still images, as in film. This phenomena allows the functioning of animation. This project will present a series of mixed media works, depicting human movement on paper and canvas with techniques inspired by traditional cel animation.

Project roomBIOMORPHICAValentina PalonenThis series of ink drawings is based upon a critical reflection of human animality and inter-species dynamics. By sourcing and appropriating the curiously anthropomorphic illustrations of John Tenniel (from such classic texts as Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), my intention is to question the extent of inherent human animality in light of evolutionary theory.
