Last thursday night HYPEMUCH attended the opening of Michael Steele’s solo show “Accumulating”, which is being held at the always awesome exhibition space, Gorker Gallery.

Michael Steele’s latest “cluster” series is like an acid-induced-brain-explosion, where all your child hood memories flood back to your frontal lobe in an instant. Using iconic characters/stuff from video games, movies, commercials and everything in between, while all being executed using a huge variety of  mediums… there’s definitely a little bit of everything in this series.

The Exhibition runs until Sunday 21 February…

An open proposal

to Andrew McConnell.

I am sure everyone loves him because he is the Chef of the Year and such.  People rave about his restaurants and find it difficult to get a booking, but this experience, moreso than the others, made me want to get down on one knee.

Ok, I don’t believe in marriage, but maybe get down on one knee and ask for his surf clam bouillabaisse recipe which went along-side my main.

Sigh.

It was…a religious experience.

It was a plate-licking experience.

We’ll start from the beginning, shall we?

Yes, we sat at the bar and had a few drinks before we started.  Why not?  Luckily the booking after us cancelled, so we pretty much had reign over the table all night.

Go team us.

Food?

Four of the most exciting, emerging improvisers from the VCA present their new duos. Freya Schack-Arnott and Nic Tammens straddle the bounds of avant garde classical, non-idiomatic improv and extended technique, producing fresh and thrilling interjections into the world of strings. Jon Heilbron and James McLean are both at the forefront of Melbourne’s new generation of performers exploring the nexus of avant jazz and sound art, their new duo deconstructs the sonic spaces where these traditions overlap. Freya Schack-Arnott (cello) and Nic Tammens (electric guitar)Jonathan Heilbron (contra bass) and James McLean (drumkit)

michael steele @ gorker

Had the gallery all to myself this afternoon, and really enjoyed looking at these works. Michael Steele is a young Melbourne artist, and Accumulating is his first solo show. If you get down to Gorker a bit, you may recall seeing his work in The 40 Thieves: The Cuban Connection last year.

Michael’s paintings/illustrations take the form of large numbers of pop culture objects, all intertwined. These clusters resonate with the impact of modern life – logos, the media, technology, shopping, entertainment, but also hint at the importance of texture, remembered objects, and our emotional connections. They are strong artworks, and seem to infer something much greater than the sum of their components. A touch of surrealism, a pinch of graffiti, ... read more

The City and the City

Imagine that the city you live in actually intersects with another city… Every street, every building exists in your city, but also in another city, which occupies the same space as your own…

This is the premise of the wonderful novel by China Miéville, The City and the City, which I read during the summer vacation. It tells of a fictional city, Beszel, somewhere on the far edges of Eastern Europe, which intersects with another city, Ul Qoma, in the way I’ve described. People live in the same space, but they are citizens of one city and not the other. The inhabitants of Beszel speak a different language to that spoken in the other city; each citizen of Beszel has to ... read more

Charcoal Lane

I first visited Charcoal Lane in September last year. This white building used to be home of Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS). I have shady memories of walking past a prominent black, yellow and red coloured building almost everyday to and from Uni. And now it has become this white and somewhat majestic building. From the outside, one would never think that this is a restaurant. It will be good if there are big glass windows or glass doors to peer into this elegant looking restaurant.
