...just don't expect me to drink Lucifer's Lovejuice.Naked for Satan285 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (map)9416 2238Naked for Satan is a gorgeous, shiny, Basque-style pintxos bar that opened a week ago on Brunswick Street."We can't stop here! This is Basque Country!"I went to check it out on Tuesday night with the lovely mlles Jess and Kate. We were wearing our highest high heels and our reddest red lipstick. Jess began, as is her wont, with a bloody mary (a 'Bloody Satan'), and I'm glad to report that it lived up to her bloody high bloody mary standards. Kate got a beer, then ...

Sassy’s Jamaican Kitchen on St George’s Rd, North Fitzroy, serves a short menu of home-style Jamaican cooking. On the night I was there with a fellow blogger we enjoyed the complimentary vegetable soup, and had roti and jerk chicken each. The soup is rich, nutty and delicious. The food is simple, so when the menu says roti it means just roti, with no sauce to dip it in. We received the complimentary soup before we had ordered, so by the time the roti arrived we had finished the soup. They would be nice together, so the trick is to order before ...
Straight from the Gorker Gallery website: “MY ILLUSIONS ARCHITECT” IS A NEW SERIES OF WORKS THAT SEES THE INTRODUCTION OF A DRAMATIC AND EXCITING JAE COPP. FOR THE PAST 12 MONTHS JAE HAS UNDERGONE AN EXPERIMENTATION PROCESS OF BOTH, MEDIUM AND TECHNICAL SKILLS, INVOLVING VARIOUS PAPER TREATMENTS, HAND STITCHING AND INTRICATE BRUSH BASED ILLUSTRATIONS. JAE HAS LONG USED ALLEGORIES AND ABSTRACT TWISTS TO TAKE PERSONAL AND SOCIAL VIEWS BOTH, GOOD AND BAD OUT OF CONTEXT, INTO A SURREAL, AND AT TIMES ALMOST SEMINONSENSICAL WAY. THROUGH THIS SERIES THE ARTIST EVOKES STORIES OF A ...

Tell us about a little about you and what inspires your work? Through my art work, images rich in layers and textures, I explore all that is intrinsically human and in particular feminine. I think the quote “the present is just a moment passed” sums up our fragile existence and gives a glimpse into the world of what my art work explores. My influences are first and foremost everything I see, feel and experience, but I’ve always had a great love of the Decorative Arts and Crafts; the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period; the great 20th Century Artists; and I have ...
Sometimes I wish I were a DJ so I could say, “No requests!” But, I’m not. The reason for this is, sometimes, you meet people in the food industry that say, “Don’t say that, don’t write this, don’t put that picture on your blog,” or, inversely ask you to specifically state (sometimes irrelevant) information. This post, on the other hand has been taken under consideration, marred (or beneficial to you who will experience the dinners) by conversation. Of course, one could argue that most of my posts have been marred by conversation, as most of the time, there will be a meeting ...
2010 newlyweds, The Lights, finally find a place to settle down this month! The blushing passion-popsters take residence at The Workers Club on Wednesdays September 1, 8 and 15. This residency also sees The Lights carry over the threshold their brand new bass player: Richard Payne brings a handsome dowry of Britpop cred, as both The Bluetones’ and Dodgy’s keys player. So do pay them a visit. The Lights have got more than enough fruitcake and bubbly to go round. Wednesday, 1 September Doors: 8:00pm
tell us about your past I grew up in the Hunter Valley N.S.W and after finishing highschool I went on to train as a photographer for 5 years at both TAFE and university. These were the days when all things were digital and fun was to be had in the darkroom with chemicals, but when the times changed and things went digital, I turned to a sewing machine instead and enrolled in a clothing production course at TAFE. This taught me the finer skills of sewing and I went on to start my own clothing label inspired by the fabrics and ...
One night, one location and two reasons to celebrate Australia’s continually evolving fashion industry. Thursday evening saw the amalgamation of fashion and writing with the launch of LIFEwithBIRD’s new flagship store ‘Project 7’ and the simultaneous launch of Mitchell Oakley Smith’s debut title ‘FASHION: Australian and New Zealand Designers’. After having opened their first LIFEwithBIRD flagship store in Melbourne’s GPO earlier this year, designers Nicholas Van Messner and Bridget McCall decided to dip their toes into a location Van Messner describes as being in the midst of a “change over”. He lists FAT and Gorman as other retailers shaking up the Brunswick ...
183 St Georges Rd,North Fitzroy VIC 3068If you have not yet eaten at the Moroccan Soup Bar do so immediately otherwise you may not call yourself a Melbournian! Places like this are one of the reasons I heart Melbourne so much. A vegetarian restaurant that doesn’t serve alcohol (or do BYO for that matter) is constantly packed out! Because the food is awesome, and cheap! The first time I ate the food was when a bunch of peeps got takeaway, and it came to something ridiculous like $5 each. These guys were also on the sustainability bandwagon long before everyone ...
Last weekend there were adventures afoot all over this city - too many even to be recounted within this post. I have put together a random patchwork of photos that I managed to take while on the run. I say patchwork but really it was sticky tape rather than thread holding my brain together as I galloped around Melbourne. (It was followed by a busy week, which is why I haven't had a chance to sit down and post until now.)Anyhoo, on Friday I spent the day finding the fun at Werribee Zoo. That evening my friends and I ...
Going through my pictures, I found this one, not a great photo, taken back on the 25th of April 2010, at The Old Bar, band unknown.

Two diverse performances this evening at the MIUC. A new duo featuring one of Melbourne's most exciting emerging free jazz/free rock drummers, Gareth Thomson, with one of Australia's most celebrated contemporary jazz guitarists, Steve Magnusson. Weekend Reflections
Cute retro vintage shop John Citizen is closing today. It’s a shame as I really like how this little strip of Brunswick St in North Fitzroy has become more lively in recent years with a variety of small businesses opening. Things I will be missing in the near future include, but are not limited to:The excellent Peep Tempel doing a free in-store at Missing Link on Friday. And there's a fairly massive bill on at Ding Dong on Saturday:I am hanging out to check out some of the Witch Hats new "Coldplay fanclub"-phase tunes live, by the way.And then on Sunday, Dave Graney finishes up his august August residency at the Old Bar:He has a new album "Supermodified", out this week and I'm guessing this show may well be a de facto launch show.I will distract myself from all these lost opportunities ...
Check out this weeks calender.
The Fitzroy area is well served by good fish and chip shops these days, with The Seafood Shak and Ol’ School Fish & Chips (which I thought I had reviewed). Now Hooked (384 Brunswick St, Fitzroy), which has been wowing the residents of Windsor for quite a while, has entered the mix. Ol’ School is superb, so Hooked was going to have to be pretty special to gain my custom. Based on my first visit, I don’t think it’s got what it takes. Not by a long shot. I bought a Box for One, which comprised two small pieces of fish, ...
In the lead-up to this year's Taste of Melbourne event, Damien Styles was interviewed yesterday by Broadsheet to find out why it only took one hour for him to decide why he would take up the position as Head Chef at Charcoal Lane.Mission Australia's social enterprise restaurant Charcoal Lane's philosophy is to provide work experience, hospitality training and a supportive environment for Aboriginal and disadvantaged young people as they transition to mainstream employment. In the interview Damien was quick to point out “I hate the word disadvantaged, for me that’s not what this place is about. It’s about positivity, giving the kids a shot ...

A week after our first visit to The Hardware Societe, Phoebe phoned me up in a gleeful tizzy. “We get paid this week, we can have a real payday lunch!” “Payday lunch!” “Paaaaaayday lunch!” “Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayday lunch!” (This went on for a while) Once we’d stopped cheerfully bellowing at each other Phoebe asked me if there was anywhere I’d had in mind to visit lately. Since we also felt like we might like to do some vintagey shopping afterward, I thought somewhere on or adjacent to Smith Street would be the ticket, and suggested Birdman Eating, and I had recently read a few reviews that ...
