Archives for February, 2010

This week, the MIUC is excited to present a series of legends of totally “out there” improv. The Charles Ives Singers have a rich heritage of pushing the boundaries of sound and performance (both collectively and individually, in visual art and music) in Melbourne for over 30 years. With ties to the legendary People With Chairs up Their Noses and the “Clifton Hill” scene, this group of visual artists have been astounding and confounding audiences with their unique blend of dada-improv and abstract avant sound. And, 3 pillars of the avant scene in Melbourne, Young, O’Hagen and Fryer promise a ...

HOT Chat: Akisa from BeautySwatch

You may remember that at the Nuffnang Christmas party I met Akisa, the brains behind a cool beauty website called BeautySwatch. I liked her idea so much (a huge colour library containing swatches for thousands of lipsticks) I thought you might be interested to hear more about Akisa and her work with BeautySwatch. Hi Akisa, can you tell me a little bit about your background? I’m a corporate rat by day and BeautySwatch editor by night – I have no affiliations with the beauty industry but do have a love for beauty products and the way they make you feel when you transform ...

The first thing we did with my family, of course, was go in hunt of some noodles to share. We wanted to go to Idea Fine Foods for their excellent combination of CNY and noodles but, alas, they have closed! Warm and hungry and slightly grumpy, we turned around and went to the Thai restaurant across the road, Sawasdee. Up the stairs we found the mezzanine busy, but were quickly seated even without a reservation. Our waiter claimed that there was no fish sauce or shrimp paste in the vegetarian curry, so we took him at his word and ordered ...

The things I ate

before I went to HK.  I seem to not be able to remember it. Well, not too well. That and I am hungover after being awake for more than two days, unable to sleep on a plane and being generally…well…drunk. I love Singapore Airlines. Moreso, I love Melbourne tap water, after being the boiling queen, it seems like a revelation to not squint and taste someone else’s metallic pee when sucking liquid straight from the sink. My brain is telling me that this was lunch at St Jude’s and I eated courtesy of them, so I guess, I can’t really say anything else other than ...

Hmm, well my colours have gone a bit all over the place… a bit of a cross process aesthetic here but I’ll just go with that. Here they are, Chris and Ryan:

A lazy Sunday Afternoon

A lazy Sunday afternoon drinking some beer at Labour in Vain and listening to Austin Flood.

…and we’re back!

Well it’s been a wee bit longer than the three weeks I promised.  Life got busy – very, very busy… I’ve been feeling terribly guilty about not adding all the photos from the Blackbird Markets, it’s honestly been on my list every week this year.  A whole day off work helps rather a lot, and so here we go.  I’ll start off this round of posting with the charming David:

Fitzroy Snapshot

The old Ace Billiards factory on Charles Street, now apartments. Not sure if it was always a Billiard Table factory or not. Anyone know?

It's kind of weird to review Grumpy's. All we've posted thus far is a quick write-up of a lunch that I had there many moons ago. In the meantime we've spent probably 15 wednesday nights there as part of the infamous Dyslexic Brians trivia ensemble, veering between glorious gold and shameful, shameful bronze (or worse!). Mostly we eat stuff that shares well: nachos (pretty good), chips (up and down) and pizza (#6 with the jalapenos is the best). Grumpy's does this kind of junky vego pub food pretty well and, while we initially made various attempts ...

This week, two duos exploring the intersection of abstracted sounds inspired by musique conctrete and the avant classical tradition and the fluidity and angularity of contemporary noise-based improv. James Rushford and Joe Talia have been lauded around town as one of the most exciting collaborations of recent times. Utilising viola, percussive objects and electronic processing, this duo has achieved a unique group-sound complimented by sublime interaction. Lazy is the longstanding duo featuring Melbourne improv luminaries, David Brown and Sean Baxter. For many years, this duo has been an outlet for both performers to explore the more extreme and severe possibilities ...

I was planning to see the 10.15am session of Clint Eastwood's Invictus at the Kino today, but being unable to tear myself away from the forums at Gallifrey Base, I left the house too late to make it to the cinema in time. Instead I went on a gentle walk through East Melbourne and back home to Fitzroy, where I have plenty of work to be doing, so I don't feel too bad about missing the film. Hopefully I'll catch a session later today at the Nova instead. We'll see. It's not a film I'm desperate to see, mind you - ...

Friday Night

After having a drink at The Fox with the crew at PBSfm, the second stop of the night was at The Gem, watched the band above while drinking a pot of draught (I'll have to check Beat to find out who they are). Then it was off to Yah Yahs to see Hugo Race and The True Spirit play.Managed to catch support Bad Orchestra(pictured above), but missed out on Celery. Very pleased to catch this band, plenty of guitar, taking you somewhere, with some great female vocals thrown in. Bad Orchestra is a band I would definitely see again and ...

Simple, stylish and sustainable

Independent with a sustainable focus, Melbourne fashion label Green Eyed Monster is celebrating its first year of creating beautiful clothing for women who care about the environment. Designer Anne Ryan’s simple, silhouette designs printed on super soft 100% certified organic cotton fabrics using eco friendly dyes have attracted the eye and support of boutiques keen to stock Australian independent designers. Her current range of whimsical bird designs are made using predominantly Australian made certified organic cotton, accredited Oeko Tex 100 Eco dyes for colour fastness and printed using water based inks. Anne said, “Encouraging people to think about the cotton before ...

The Fairy Tree

Hello little redcap, hello Agaric, hello Kookaburra. The fairy tree seems to have had a fresh coat of paint. That's me with the mega-bow in my hair and my trusty elf side-kick.

Hack hack hack.

Hmm, sorry about that brief break in transmission. Let's pile a load of stuff into this one, shall we?If you missed AC/DC playing at Airline Stadium in Melbourne last week, then this tribute show at the Old Bar may be some small (very small) compensation: I understand one of the Oldie's owners is celebrating his beard's 21st birthday, or something of that nature, on Friday night, too. Whatever- he's a guy who has been known to drink gin & Red Bull at times, so, y'know, approach with caution. Then remember to set the alarm early-ish so you can get a good ...
