sublime

This work first appeared in Fitzroy as a paste-up but it and its companion have also been created as paintings. I like both versions. Last thursday night HYPEMUCH attended the opening of Michael Steele’s solo show “Accumulating”, which is being held at the always awesome exhibition space, Gorker Gallery. - Michael Steele’s latest “cluster” series is like an acid-induced-brain-explosion, where all your child hood memories flood back to your frontal lobe in an instant. Using iconic characters/stuff from video games, movies, commercials and everything in between, while all being executed using a huge variety of  mediums… there’s definitely a little bit of everything in this series. The Exhibition runs until Sunday 21 February… Gorker Gallery Opening Hours: 3PM – 7PM Wednesay – Friday 11AM – 7PM Saturday & Sunday http://www.gorkergallery.com - Taken from ...

sparcs is elegant

Two connected works by sparcs: the first on Rose St near the corner of Brunswick St, Fitzroy, and the second on the corner building at the intersection of Brunswick St and St George’s Rd, North Fitzroy. the secret bbq cult

There are several similar bbq paintings around the inner city. Each bbq only has one sausage on it. Do they mean something? Are they signs pointing to meetings of a sinisiter secret bbq cult? From top to bottom: North Fitzroy, wall of laneway off Reid St just behind St George’s Rd; Hosier Lane Melbourne; and laneway between Rose St and Leicester St east of Brunswick St. Fitzroyalty - hyperlocal news and reviews about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 by Brian Ward is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 Australia License.

On the evening of 2 December I attended Shift – the 2009 RMIT graduate printmaking exhibition at Red gallery on St George’s Rd in North Fitzroy. It was packed with people and full of quality work – I particularly liked ‘Adaption’ by Eloise Linklater (in the photo below). It closes on 19 December. On Wednesday evening I attended the opening of the RMIT fine art photography first year graduate show at the Library Artspace – J Studios, 100 Barkly St, North Fitzroy. I was impressed by the work and bought two photos by Hillary Kirkland, who had never sold work before. I think I was as delighted to be her first client as she was to sell her first work. I also appreciated the surreal superimposed images in Christian Munari’s ‘Intramural’ and the sense of stillness in ‘Chiaroscuro’ by Lauren Crosling. Telia Nevile’s photos of her friends and colleagues from the Last Tuesday Society ...

Slight Inclusions

On Saturday a friend and I visited Lamington Drive in Fitzroy to see Kat McLeod's exhibition. I love her sketches and the fun detail she adds to them via bursts of coloured paper, sequins, cocktail umbrellas, stitched cotton and even Cadbury chocolate packets.Brunswick Streetafternoon light I can't wait for summer and long days spent wafting around this magical city with all its promise.Mood: 'Bullet Proof... Just Got Home from The Opening of Nate Holmes Trapnell’s Second Solo Exhibition “The King Pin” at Gorker Gallery in fitzroy. The attention to detail in his art is utterly amazing and his imagination is pretty wild too. All ilustrated with Fine Liner’s. Running with a Rockabilly/Bowling Ally  Theme Through out the Exhibit, it’s Running through From November 12th till the 29th. Anyway enough crap from me ill let the pros give you a run down….. “The King Pin’ is a figment of the imagination of gifted emerging Melbourne based artist Nate Holmes Trapnell. It’s the second installment in solo shows ...

Since reading a vague story about an art competition open to Fitzroy and North Fitzroy artists I have been chasing more details and finally have the information available to report on it. The following is adapted from copy supplied to me by the competition organisers. The developers of the ROI apartments on Nicholson St in North Fitzroy invite artists to submit paintings in competition for a $10,000 cash prize known as the ROI Art Prize. The competition is open to any artist residing, or represented by a gallery or dealer, in the Fitzroy or Fitzroy North community. Artists can submit one work ...

100 Kites

I went to the opening of Clemens Habicht's 100 Kites exhibition at Lamington Drive last night. It was a fantastic evening. As soon as we walked into the gallery we were greeted with a video showing the bird kites freewheeling gleefully in the sky. The birds, which were affixed to a clear backing on a light aerodynamic wooden frame, were constructed from cut-outs of pictures from the pages of old books. The images used ranged from RAF personnel photos, to astronauts, globes, airmail envelopes, old illustrations and goldfish. There was something both liberating about the airborne nature of the ...

Picture This 09, featuring 850 works by 350 photographers, opens tonight at 6pm at Brunswick St Gallery. The show runs until 24 September. I got a peek last Sunday while it was being set up. In Melbourne today- rain, rain, and more rain. But the weekend is just around the corner and the weather forecast calls for plenty of sunshine… So If you haven’t already penciled yourself in for the weekend and you’re looking for something do to- here’s my suggestion for Saturday/Sunday. Visit the Rose Street Artists Market in Fitzroy and make sure you check out Greg’s concession- he designs jewelery with materials used from cutlery, forks and tea spoons.

The Everfresh wall in Fitzroy

Recently when I was reading the excellent blog by Very Nearly Almost, I came across a recent post which was celebrating some of Melbourne’s street art (which you can read here) and noticed that the Everfresh wall in Fitzroy was featured. The post reminded me that I photographed this wall a few weeks ago, with the intention of dedicating a whole post to the amazing work of the Everfresh crew in creating this wall. So here is that post… Everfresh will be well known to many readers of this blog, since their contribution to street art in Melbourne has been enormous. Their work, ...

Love Me, Love Me Not 2009-08-19 00:53:00

I'm staying up late for a secret mission at approximately 0305 hours, so I'm cleaning my house and wasting time on the internet. Here's a cute thing I stole from Pip of Meet Me At Mike's.This past week, here's what I've been...Making: owl mittens.Cooking: chocolate and almond torte for my mother's 50th birthday celebrations on Sunday.Drinking: rotgut red wine with a new friend, and Cascade Green with an old friend.Reading: Cafe Europa by Slavenka Drakulić - a series of essays on life in post-Communist Eastern Europe.Wanting: a holiday.Looking: at the pretty night sky in the street behind my house.Playing: ...

Two stops early

It's amazing what happens when you grab the chance and get off the tram two stops early.I keep seeing these pieces of street-art from the tram when I'm near my work. Today I got off the tram two stops early so I could enjoy them up close and photograph them. Finally! For reasons that appear apparent to me, the piece above reminds me of Kirty's recollection of a Joni Mitchell song.My youngest loves ladybugs at the moment. He'll be wrapped with this photo. And, of course, a tiger. This one's pretty good for a stencil art-piece. Nice lines.

Get your jump on

It's so funny how, when you're so busy because you have so much stuff to get done, you can think of a million things you would like to be doing with your time once you own it again. Here's one of mine:This is an exhibition by artist Rik Lee showing at Lamington Drive in Fitzroy. Here's the description from the gallery's site:ONE LAST LATE NIGHTEarlier this year Rik Lee was diagnosed with chronic insomnia. He tried reading and late night television, but they failed. So he gave in and spent his nights listening to bad music and drawing pictures. The ...

Episode 3: Markets

The third podcast. Come with me to visit my favourite market in Melbourne, The Rose Street Artist Markets. I talk to one of the organisers as well as to stall holders. There are suggestions about what other markets are worth exploring in Melbourne. Episode 3

I'm a little disappointed that I won't be in Melbourne this weekend, as otherwise I'd be completely immersed in State of Design, Victoria's design festival.Fortunately, some of the events are open during the course of ten day festival. So today I decided to visit the venue closest to me, Panelpop, which is displaying a series of photographs entitled 'UK Overgrown'.This small exhibition displays a handful of photographs by Collingwood-based photographer Adrian Lander, taken while he was visiting London, Sussex and Wales. The works explore our desire to tame the natural environment around us, but if we're not vigilant, Mother Nature ...

all alone

This Makatron piece in North Fitzroy on the corner of Brunswick St and York St seems rather forlorn at being all alone. Like High Street Northcote, Gertrude Street is a creative hub which runs an arts festival in partnership with residents of the street. The annual Gertrude St Projection Festival exhibits projection art onto shops, restaurants and pubs and this year artists had to interpret the theme of 'dream'.On a wintery Thursday night some of my book club members and I joined Gertrude Walkabout, a walking tour from Smith St to Nicholson St conducted by the Gertrude St Association. The talk was particularly informative because en route we ran into some of the artists, who were able to discuss the inspiration ...
