Tell us about a little about you and what inspires your work? Through my art work, images rich in layers and textures, I explore all that is intrinsically human and in particular feminine. I think the quote “the present is just a moment passed” sums up our fragile existence and gives a glimpse into the world of what my art work explores. My influences are first and foremost everything I see, feel and experience, but I’ve always had a great love of the Decorative Arts and Crafts; the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period; the great 20th Century Artists; and I have ...

30.07.2010—25.09.2010 Gallery 1 ROBIN FOX PROOF OF CONCEPT The Proof of Concept series emerges out of Robin Fox’s practice spanning seven years as an audio-visual performance artist exploring the area of synaesthesia via electrical signal equivalence. These explorations focus on the conversion of sounding electricity into visual electricity using oscilloscopes and laser projectors to facilitate the visualisations. The use of both mediums requires that a single light source move with enough speed to create persistence of vision, allowing for the emergence of solid two- and three-dimensional correlates to the sound algorithms. In this series of photographs, sounding algorithms are visualised using laser light and ...
In light of his upcoming exhibition, Infinite Nature, at Gorker Gallery, there was no question in our minds that Beastman was someone we wanted to touch base with. Having followed his work the last few years, the progression of his artistic expression into a fully fledged, stylistically manifested world of strange creatures and infinite evolved [...]
Until a friend looking through my phone photos commented on it, I didn’t realise I have a strange fascination for toilet walls. I have heaps of snaps taken in the stalls of the the ladies’ in various pubs and bars I’ve visited. Now that I think about it I realise I’ve featured the walls of bimbos before and posted photos of graffiti in Vanuatu too. I suppose in such a closed off intimate space, the walls have a captive audience. No two stalls are the same: some walls have paste ups, some walls are just riddled with all forms of graffiti conveying people’s ...
Going through our daily blogs, we spotted the flyer for the great group exhibition that is “Free Brains” at SJS Gallery, and, amongst the talent listed, we noticed that one of our favourites, Adnate, was also contributing a piece to the show. So we figured, what better opportunity to ask a few questions, and delve into [...]
At the front's display of Thai restaurant on Brunswick Street. They show Khon Masks which I really like it. This beautiful Khon masks comprise part of the costume of performers of the classical dance-drama of Thailand called " Mask Play " A Khon performance involves singing, dancing, acting, acrobatics, and music. The singing is accomplished by an offstage chorus which also recites the narrative and dialogues. The majority of actors are-unable to do this because of the masks they wear. Some forms of the masked-play, probably older forms, did not use singing. Stories for the drama are based exclusively on the Ramakien, the ...
It was almost dark by the time I found the number, the only indication of any type of habitation was in the form of a non-decrepit steel door all stickered, tagged and signed with various recognisable marks – names, logos, characters, and, of course, the stylised, almost runic arrangements of TwoOnes familiar font. I’d pre-warned him that [...]
Opening Night Thursday 17 June, 6:30pm – 8:30pm Following the success of her debut solo exhibition Where the Dry Leaves Fall at Gorker Gallery in 2008, Leah Bartholomew presents her new body of work These are the Days in her second solo exhibition. These are the Days is an intimate exploration of the small, special moments that binds us together in friendship and create a sense of place. The prints, collages and paper sculptures delicately handcrafted by Bartholomew tell the story of a protracted coming of age, anchored in the landscapes of both experience and imagination. From poetic scenes such as the group ...
A unique sculptural feature of Brunswick Street art the decorative excentric sculptural signs above many of the shops. And this is my favorite flowers shop “Flowers Vasette” Look so cool with bees and carnivorous plant. This street is amazing with the most vibrant venues – arty, music-filled cafes, restaurants and bars as well as second-hand and young designer stores. check out this link : Brunswick Street ( it's really cool website )
Saw this one posted this morning, it’s a pretty worthy cause so hopefully a fair few heads make their way down to it – good chance to check out some great art as well as give a hand to some kids in need. “This Thursday night there is a fundraiser auction for Orphund at the Rose [...]
Fitzroy is one of suburbs in Melbourne where I really like it. There is rich with street art and unique people same as this lady who have a coffee and enjoy looking the art on the wall.
Last week, we all heard the news that Per Square Metre, Collingwoods much loved and respected artist run gallery, was to shut up shop after several years of providing the community with a veritable feast of shows. This week, however, comes their final hoorah, a celebration of the galleries achievements in the form of their final [...]
Darren Hendersons recent work is an explosive menagerie revolving around the most enigmatic of all birds of prey, yet, unlike the darkened nights in which owls usually dwell, Henderson has managed to illuminate his subjects, not only by their sheer numbers, but by colourful skill of hand and witty presentation. In his recent solo exhibition “Get [...]

With the year already off to a remarkable start with several major solo and group exhibitions having come, and, successfully, gone, Per Square Metre is preparing for its next feature, the first solo exhibition from talented up and coming artist Jack Douglas. Following on from the Dabs Myla exhibition, Per Square have another showcase of a young up and coming artist, Jack Douglas, whose work has been seen gracing a plethora of walls and exhibitions around the city in the past couple of years. This guys work is fantastically energetic in its weird and stylised way, so [...]
When I first moved from England to Melbourne, in 1995, I lived in Carlton North but I spent a lot of time in Fitzroy, and I was struck by what I could see on the walls there. Not stencils (they would come later), not tags or pieces (they were on the trains, and the walls adjoining the train lines), but a kind of conversation taking place on the walls. Sometimes the conversation was between the authors of the comments, but oftentimes the addressee was me – or at least any individual who was walking, or taking the train, or driving, ...

Sydney artist Ben Frost is putting on an exhibition at Gorker Gallery in April under the title “Confessions of a Modern Citizen”, The man has exhibited all around the world, and his colourful pop inspired urbanish pieces have garnered him fans far and wide. With this exhibition he delves a bit deeper, asking the nominally [...]
Seems like Dabs and Myla are back from an overseas jaunt, and are teaming up to put on an exhibition at Per Square Metre for the Easter break – and its really looking to be something special. With their own collaborations as well as collaborative pieces with luminaries such as Greg “Craola” Simkins, [...]
There would be no stretch of the imagination involved if one was to suggest that Melbourne artist Makatron has been making waves in the past year with his exhibitions, murals and street art. As part of the Everfresh crew, who have a large array of colossal murals and more subtle pieces spread across both Burn [...]
The Brunswick Street Gallery has, for some time, been a bastion of visual innovation amongst the sidewalk-bustle of Melbournes creative hub, Fitzroy. With numerous exhibitions revolving around both solo and group works, as well as competitions for emerging and established artists, it is no surprise that their next endeavour is helping to foster the expanding [...]
Two of Melbourne’s finest, Ghostpatrol and Miso, have produced their own map of the cities best known street art – its in a downloadable PDF which lets whoever wants to go around exploring M-towns art to just print it out on a piece of paper, jump on a tram and go … such a great [...]
This work first appeared in Fitzroy as a paste-up but it and its companion have also been created as paintings. I like both versions.
