An open proposal

to Andrew McConnell. I am sure everyone loves him because he is the Chef of the Year and such.  People rave about his restaurants and find it difficult to get a booking, but this experience, moreso than the others, made me want to get down on one knee. Ok, I don’t believe in marriage, but maybe get down on one knee and ask for his surf clam bouillabaisse recipe which went along-side my main. Sigh. It was…a religious experience. It was a plate-licking experience. We’ll start from the beginning, shall we? Yes, we sat at the bar and had a few drinks before we started.  Why not?  ...

Cutler & Co

It was my aunt’s 60th Birthday and she chose this place to celebrate.  Why? Well, the restaurant won so many awards, “Restaurant of Year” (2 hatted restaurant), “Chef of the Year” and “Best New Restaurant” for 2010.  Located on Getrude Street, Fitzroy.  The Restaurant was an old metal factory and surely depicts what the architecture in the interior.  Funky and modern lighting with high ceiling.  Rustic walls blend in with the modern fixtures like the bar.  A huge cellar was on display with a long list of wines. Salad Lyonnaise We made reservations at 6.30pm.  Bookings were booked out from 8.30pm.  That’s ...

Happy Birthday to me.

Today is a very special day: my birthday! Last night we had a beautiful and relaxed Sunday night dinner at our all time favourite haunt, Cutler & Co. No review today but I will give you a rundown of my practically perfect meal for your gastronomical imagination. I have non-blog related work to do today so this will be unembellished, please bear with me! I had two just shucked oysters to start: a kumamoto and a rusty nail. I also had an anchovy pastry (I have weird, salty leaning tastes. Anchovies are high up there on my list of favourite flavours. Emily ...

Sunday Lunch.

Sure, it’s not your typical Sunday lunch, as the Lincoln family noted, but it was a lunch nonetheless.  Something different, new and in the day-time: something we’re not used to seeing each other in. This is the fourth Sunday lunch that Cutler and Co have held and it is something more casual, an encouragement of booze, or perhaps that is the company I keep.  The seven of us, occupying a booth usually reserved for six started our day with a few pints at the Worker’s Club.  On being seated, as casual as the service appears, it isn’t.  It’s still polished, noticeably ...

The dessert that made me a plate licker. I’m not the only one worrying about the recession. But I’m probably the only one in Cutler & Co thinking about it. The reincarnation of chef Andrew McConnell’s Three, One, Two at the top end of Gertrude St is packed. So packed, McConnell later tells me that it took them by surprise which explains a couple of timing issues that a few of you will have seen on Twitter. But the whole experience isn’t about minor niggles magnified by a control freak social media misanthrope like myself. It is about the the whole ...
