Freaks and a festival.

Have you ever seen Telecom? No? I didn't think so.Despite the fact they have no drummer anymore, the Old Bar are kindly letting them play this Friday night, along with Sweetmac, Daughterboy Jao and Damn The Torpedoes. One of the guys from Telecom tells me Damn The Torpedoes are pretty good, so maybe an early start and an early night is best. Then something on the southside for Sunday:I'm not quite sure what kind of fuckwit thinks Ripponlea is a secret. There's a goddamn train station there and everything. Still, this from a local council who issues media releases about public ...

vignettes

What you need comes to youI tripped off to the new(ish) Fitzroy market on Saturday before Armageddon hit. It reminded me of Glebe market when I first went there twenty-something years ago. Smaller. But Has Promise. The rent from the stalls at the market goes to Fitzroy School’s Kitchen Garden project. That’s reason enough to support it. A couple of days before I’d made a batch of marinated olives. Carbon dating the original recipe*, I scribbled it down and first made them in the mid ‘80s. It’s a simple concoction – a few herbs, ...

Monday Melbourne Roundup (Wednesday edition)

A relatively quiet week. I'm feeling loads better, I got made permanent at my job so I will have no money for a million years (I'm switching from weekly pay to monthly pay, my first pay 5 days before I go to Europe which is probably a good thing).outMadagascarOh Noni. This play was the most suicidally depressing play I've seen in ages, it was really superb but really, only see it if you are prepared to want to slash your wrists afterwards. Amazingly acted, Noni is just stunning always. MTC subscription, I have perhaps figured you out, the three ...

Fitzroy Curry House: a new era.

I have a lot of fond memories of eating at Guru da Dhaba in Johnston St. I met my now sister-in-law there for the first time, had many a boozy boozy dinner there, and the first meal in our new house was take-away from there, eaten in the back garden while slugging champagne. A little while back I phoned Guru to order some take-away and the phone was disconnected. Odd. I walked past a few days later and the place was boarded up. Soon enough, a new Indian restaurant emerged there, Tandoori Station. I decided to wait it out before giving it ...

vegie bar ii

I've been to Vegie Bar three times in the last fortnight! This is more than I ever have previously! The first visit was because I was working in the area, and feeling a little unwell I had their soup of the day. 12pm on a Wednesday afternoon, the service was good and it was kind of quiet, and the pumpkin soup was just what I needed to get through the day. No photos, but thanks for the soup. The second visit was with T, who met me after my FOE shift last week to borrow a book and to hang. We ...

I am printing again, which usually entails a visit or two to Dale to hassle him for screens or a studio. I dropped into his shop the other day only to discover a 50% sale. Just when I need exciting new leggings. Everything in the store is printed and made in a No Sweat workshop up the road in Fitzroy. The shop is on Smith St just south of Gertrude and is well worth a look for all kindsa printed goodness. Sale continues til March 13.Meanwhile, I have been catching eyes up at bunnings with my electric legs.

The Glories of Gertrude Street

Somewhat overshadowed by its Brunswick Street neighbour, Gertrude Street is a place for people in the know. The vibe is still arty but being less of a thoroughfare by design it is a lot quieter and feels all the more sophisticated for it. The home of creative, young professionals, it’s more refined than much of Fitzroy, a true diamond in the rough. The DeconstructionistsGertrude Street pays homage to the Deconstructionists, the likes of Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto with stores such as Left and Assin stocking Comme specifically and others, notably E.S.S. offering its own interpretation. With its range of womenswear ...

Travel time.

Well, one way or another I was always going to be on the road this (long) weekend. For the first time ever, I'm booked in for Golden Plains:There's a long and involved story about two friends getting me drunk and suggesting this would be an ideal way to get over my general dislike of festivals. Whatever, the line up was enough to convince me.Who’s playing. This year’s lineup is brought to you by the letters “spirited”, “pirate” and “classic”.PAVEMENT, DINOSAUR JR, DIRTY PROJECTORS, THE BIG PINK, MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS, TAME IMPALA, SUPER WILD HORSES, OPTIMO, CALEXICO, MONOTONIX, GASLAMP KILLER, NASHVILLE PUSSY, JEFFREY ...

where the wild things are

Mike O’ Meally’s film stills are truly amazing. Today I was fortunate enough to have Lamington Drive all to myself, and enjoyed wandering through this show. For those who came in late, Spike Jonze invited Mike to hang out on set for a week, and capture the wild rumpus on film. Printed on 30×40 canvas, these images are lively, dark, and playful. Mike O’ Meally’s work is on show at Lamington Drive until 13 March. Read the Artabase exhibition blurb here… Filed under: fitzroy, love your work

Tuesday March 9th @ the Make It Up Club

A very rare performance from this internationally renowned, abstract improv trio, featuring 3 of Melbourne’s most accomplished and adventurous. This appearance by Pateras/Baxter/Brown at the MIUC is made even more special by the fact that there will be no piano! That’s right, the first P/B/B electro set in Melbourne in over 5 years, featuring Anthony Pateras on the Doepfer modular analogue synthesizer and Revox reel to reel. And, unleashing a new set of extreme improv-noise explorations on the humble electric guitar, the maestro brutagist of monolithic subsonics, Marco Fusinato. Heavy times indeed! Pateras/Baxter/Brown featuring: Anthony Pateras (doepfer and revox), ...

NOT: Min Lokal, 422 George St, Fitzroy

My friend M is moving into Fitzroy next week and for our Sunday catchup he wanted to try a place around his new hood. Min Lokal is Swedish for ‘my local’ and I thought it’d be the perfect venue for this northside newbie. Evidently lots of other locals treat Min Lokal as their neighbourhood cafe too, as trendy student-types, young parents and groovy couples spilled out onto the pavement stools, crowded around the two communal tables in the front room and enjoyed the quiet of the rear courtyard. We were there at midday and there was a dizzying stream of customers ...

Marcus and Lynette

This week, the MIUC is excited to present a series of legends of totally “out there” improv. The Charles Ives Singers have a rich heritage of pushing the boundaries of sound and performance (both collectively and individually, in visual art and music) in Melbourne for over 30 years. With ties to the legendary People With Chairs up Their Noses and the “Clifton Hill” scene, this group of visual artists have been astounding and confounding audiences with their unique blend of dada-improv and abstract avant sound. And, 3 pillars of the avant scene in Melbourne, Young, O’Hagen and Fryer promise a ...

HOT Chat: Akisa from BeautySwatch

You may remember that at the Nuffnang Christmas party I met Akisa, the brains behind a cool beauty website called BeautySwatch. I liked her idea so much (a huge colour library containing swatches for thousands of lipsticks) I thought you might be interested to hear more about Akisa and her work with BeautySwatch. Hi Akisa, can you tell me a little bit about your background? I’m a corporate rat by day and BeautySwatch editor by night – I have no affiliations with the beauty industry but do have a love for beauty products and the way they make you feel when you transform ...

The first thing we did with my family, of course, was go in hunt of some noodles to share. We wanted to go to Idea Fine Foods for their excellent combination of CNY and noodles but, alas, they have closed! Warm and hungry and slightly grumpy, we turned around and went to the Thai restaurant across the road, Sawasdee. Up the stairs we found the mezzanine busy, but were quickly seated even without a reservation. Our waiter claimed that there was no fish sauce or shrimp paste in the vegetarian curry, so we took him at his word and ordered ...

The things I ate

before I went to HK.  I seem to not be able to remember it. Well, not too well. That and I am hungover after being awake for more than two days, unable to sleep on a plane and being generally…well…drunk. I love Singapore Airlines. Moreso, I love Melbourne tap water, after being the boiling queen, it seems like a revelation to not squint and taste someone else’s metallic pee when sucking liquid straight from the sink. My brain is telling me that this was lunch at St Jude’s and I eated courtesy of them, so I guess, I can’t really say anything else other than ...
