SED Dinner at Charcoal Lane

Sometimes I wish I were a DJ so I could say, “No requests!” But, I’m not.  The reason for this is, sometimes, you meet people in the food industry that say, “Don’t say that, don’t write this, don’t put that picture on your blog,” or, inversely ask you to specifically state (sometimes irrelevant) information. This post, on the other hand has been taken under consideration, marred (or beneficial to you who will experience the dinners) by conversation.  Of course, one could argue that most of my posts have been marred by conversation, as most of the time, there will be a meeting ...

One  night, one location and two reasons to celebrate Australia’s continually evolving fashion industry. Thursday evening saw the amalgamation of fashion and writing with the launch of LIFEwithBIRD’s new flagship store ‘Project 7’ and the simultaneous launch of Mitchell Oakley Smith’s debut title ‘FASHION: Australian and New Zealand Designers’. After having opened their first LIFEwithBIRD flagship store in Melbourne’s GPO earlier this year, designers Nicholas Van Messner and Bridget McCall decided to dip their toes into a location Van Messner describes as being in the midst of a “change over”. He lists FAT and Gorman as other retailers shaking up the Brunswick ...

MOROCCAN SOUP BAR

183 St Georges Rd,North Fitzroy VIC 3068If you have not yet eaten at the Moroccan Soup Bar do so immediately otherwise you may not call yourself a Melbournian! Places like this are one of the reasons I heart Melbourne so much. A vegetarian restaurant that doesn’t serve alcohol (or do BYO for that matter) is constantly packed out! Because the food is awesome, and cheap! The first time I ate the food was when a bunch of peeps got takeaway, and it came to something ridiculous like $5 each. These guys were also on the sustainability bandwagon long before everyone ...

Where the Wild Things Are

Last weekend there were adventures afoot all over this city - too many even to be recounted within this post. I have put together a random patchwork of photos that I managed to take while on the run. I say patchwork but really it was sticky tape rather than thread holding my brain together as I galloped around Melbourne. (It was followed by a busy week, which is why I haven't had a chance to sit down and post until now.)Anyhoo, on Friday I spent the day finding the fun at Werribee Zoo. That evening my friends and I ...

Sometimes I forget

Going through my pictures, I found this one, not a great photo, taken back on the 25th of April 2010, at The Old Bar, band unknown.

A Window of Brunswick

Weekend Reflections

Things I will miss.

Things I will be missing in the near future include, but are not limited to:The excellent Peep Tempel doing a free in-store at Missing Link on Friday. And there's a fairly massive bill on at Ding Dong on Saturday:I am hanging out to check out some of the Witch Hats new "Coldplay fanclub"-phase tunes live, by the way.And then on Sunday, Dave Graney finishes up his august August residency at the Old Bar:He has a new album "Supermodified", out this week and I'm guessing this show may well be a de facto launch show.I will distract myself from all these lost opportunities ...

Hooked

The Fitzroy area is well served by good fish and chip shops these days, with The Seafood Shak and Ol’ School Fish & Chips (which I thought I had reviewed). Now Hooked (384 Brunswick St, Fitzroy), which has been wowing the residents of Windsor for quite a while, has entered the mix. Ol’ School is superb, so Hooked was going to have to be pretty special to gain my custom. Based on my first visit, I don’t think it’s got what it takes. Not by a long shot. I bought a Box for One, which comprised two small pieces of fish, ...

In the lead-up to this year's Taste of Melbourne event, Damien Styles was interviewed yesterday by Broadsheet to find out why it only took one hour for him to decide why he would take up the position as Head Chef at Charcoal Lane.Mission Australia's social enterprise restaurant Charcoal Lane's philosophy is to provide work experience, hospitality training and a supportive environment for Aboriginal and disadvantaged young people as they transition to mainstream employment. In the interview Damien was quick to point out “I hate the word disadvantaged, for me that’s not what this place is about. It’s about positivity, giving the kids a shot ...

Interview – Jae Copp

Gifted Queensland bred artist Jae Copp has had a busy artistic career so far, from designing skatewear and starting his own brand, to exhibiting his artistic output in a wide range of shows. Having worked utilising wood for many years, producing a cool array of works in the process, Jae has branched out into new directions [...]

Birdman Eating

A week after our first visit to The Hardware Societe, Phoebe phoned me up in a gleeful tizzy. “We get paid this week, we can have a real payday lunch!” “Payday lunch!” “Paaaaaayday lunch!” “Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayday lunch!” (This went on for a while) Once we’d stopped cheerfully bellowing at each other Phoebe asked me if there was anywhere I’d had in mind to visit lately. Since we also felt like we might like to do some vintagey shopping afterward, I thought somewhere on or adjacent to Smith Street would be the ticket, and suggested Birdman Eating, and I had recently read a few reviews that ...

Green vote surge in Federal Election

While we still don't know who will be our Prime Minister, one thing is clear - the Greens have been the big winners in this election.Adam Bandt, Sarah Hanson-Young, Bob Brown and Richard Di Natale. Photo: AAPHere in the seat of Melbourne, Adam Bandt won his party's first ever lower house seat (in a general election) with a massive 13% increase in the Green primary vote (to a total of 36%) and a 10% swing from Labor to Greens two-party-preferred. Nationally the Greens gained about 11.5% of the primary vote, an increase of almost 4% from last election, by far ...

Tuesday August 24th @ the Make It Up Club

This week, the MIUC runs the gamut from circuit-bending, to extreme vokills, to skronking double quintet aktion. Damien Young's Social Climber project explores the sonic expanse of DIY electronics, creating impossible audial landscapes through cracked circuits and voice. Two of Melbourne's most talented extreme metal singers combine for the first time as a duo, blending abstract noise electronics with the growling viscera of grindcore and black metal. And a massive group featuring some of Melbourne's most experimental improvisers harvesting the limits of free jazz and free punk. • Social Climber ...

August 13, 2010: Yume

Cindy is a voracious reader of Melbourne food blogs, meaning she's always got some restaurant ideas tucked away when we're out and about at a loose end. Thus, when we wandered out of the Union Club Hotel last Friday night ready to hunt down some dinner, Cindy was the one who steered us away from some of our regular haunts and towards Yume, based on a recommendation from Jesska in May 2009.It's an understated place, not as atmospheric as Wabi Sabi or Peko Peko, but pleasant and welcoming nonetheless. Cindy kicked things off with a grape soda ...

Blogging photos: Latte, Kent St, Fitzroy

So there I was, just polishing off my second Kent St latte for the day, when I noticed I was surrounded by great black and white photos of things in Melbourne. The poster told me the exhibition was from melbournestreet.net, a site that posts a new photo from the streets of Melbourne every day. I thought to myself, "Yeah, posting something every day, that's a great idea. I should do something like that. Oh hang on. I already do something like that. Oh crap, I haven't posted on the coffee blog since the start of July! I'd better take a ...

Fantastic illustration, experimental stitching and paper treatments, cool post-apocalyptic themes and surrealistic excursion? Such is the work of Jae Copp, a man who has been featured in various publications, sites and has already had work in a huge range of shows. His upcoming solo exhibition at Gorker Gallery, My Illusions Architect, looks to be a wonderfully [...]

The City of Yarra gives me the shits

The farce that is the plan to build new and much needed public toilets in Fitzroy and nearby areas in the City of Yarra continues to provide amusement and frustration in equal measure. The City of Yarra spends years ignoring the issue, then announced a ludicrously impractical alternative to outsource the provision of public toilets to private businesses, before accepting responsibility for fixing the issue and nominating potential locations: 3 were listed in May 2009. In May 2010 the Westgarth St location was rejected due to complaints from neighbours including the Firefighters Credit Union. They provided no evidence to support their ...

VEGIE BAR

380 Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC 3065Ph (03) 9417 6935   Vegie Bar is great. Another one of my faves. The food is cheap and delicious. I have to say though I never try new things on the menu, I always get the burrito. Every time, before I go to the Vegie Bar I give myself a little pep-talk...kinda like “now don’t go ordering the burrito this time, you should try something new and not be so boring”....and every time I look at the menu and go for the burrito. Meh...perhaps sometimes going with what you know isn’t such a bad ...

Keith Wiltshire @ 69 Smith St.

I walked past a house in my neighbourhood of Coburg and noticed a carved stone amid the foliage in the front garden. The geometric form of the stone would have been a feature but it was a bit too small. At least it wasn’t kitsch, cast garden sculpture that they sell further up Sydney Road. What they needed is one of Keith Wiltshire’s sculptures. I don’t see a lot of sculpture suitable for domestic garden settings on exhibition; most contemporary sculptures appear suitable only for indoor locations, preferably an art gallery. It is harder to make sculpture that can survive exposure ...
