where the wild things are

Mike O’ Meally’s film stills are truly amazing. Today I was fortunate enough to have Lamington Drive all to myself, and enjoyed wandering through this show. For those who came in late, Spike Jonze invited Mike to hang out on set for a week, and capture the wild rumpus on film. Printed on 30×40 canvas, these images are lively, dark, and playful. Mike O’ Meally’s work is on show at Lamington Drive until 13 March. Read the Artabase exhibition blurb here… Filed under: fitzroy, love your work

michael steele @ gorker

Had the gallery all to myself this afternoon, and really enjoyed looking at these works. Michael Steele is a young Melbourne artist, and Accumulating is his first solo show. If you get down to Gorker a bit, you may recall seeing his work in The 40 Thieves: The Cuban Connection last year. Michael’s paintings/illustrations take the form of large numbers of pop culture objects, all intertwined. These clusters resonate with the impact of modern life – logos, the media, technology, shopping, entertainment, but also hint at the importance of texture, remembered objects, and our emotional connections. They are strong artworks, and ...

penfold’s buildings

Penfold’s Buildings (aka former Cable Car sheds) are on the corner of Brunswick Street and Victoria Parade. They are a beautiful example of Interwar Moderne, and were designed by Harry Norris. The Penfold’s appear doomed to demolition, so do go past, admire, and take lots of photos. Do it quick, before some fugly apartments go up in its place… Visit the Art Deco & Modernism Society for more info. Currently they are derelict, seemingly held together by layers of peeling paint, posters, and graffiti. If you’d like to check out some more Harry Norris, take a city walk – look ...

street origami

Cranes are symbols of love, luck, and longevity. Legend has it that folding 1000 cranes may result in your greatest wish being granted. People also fold senbazuru for peace, leaving them outdoors like prayer flags. The elements wear away at the crane, releasing the hopes and dreams within. This one is on the back wall of the Birmingham Hotel. I don’t know who placed it there, or why. Have you seen cranes like this anywhere? The amazingly talented and patient Crumpet made a stop motion animation about Sadako Sasaki and her cranes. Watch it here. Sounds and music by Pants In Motion. Posted ...
