I was sad to see Glitch bar and cinema on St George’s Rd closed when I walked past recently. I was a regular there when it first opened and a lot of fantastic shows were held there. Nelly Thomas’ Character Comedy began there, where I first saw comedians like Sam Simmons and Wilson Dixon. Perhaps the best show I saw there was a piece of interactive theatre, with a live band accompaniment, incorporating voyeuristic cinema. In the cinema room at the rear the screen showed vision from the front bar captured by hidden cameras. The band played while you watched the ...

When I was reading through the Next Wave 2010 Festival program, the show Dangerous Melbourne caught my eye. “Is living in Melbourne a danger to your a) health b) wealth c) safety d) sanity? Are you taking outrageous risks a) riding down Collins Street b) walking home at night c) just waking up every morning? Fear not – help is at hand. The Dangerous Melbourne community information evening will provide you with the things you need to know to survive the terrors of our fair city. Be informed, not alarmed. Cups of tea and biscuits also provided.” It sounded like it could a humorous ...

Last week I promoted SNAFU theatre’s Saturday Afternoon Soap Opera at Mirrors upstairs on Brunswick St, and I went along to watch the first performance. A good audience of about 40 people enjoyed the show, which featured a stereotypical soapie style plot revolving around a brother and sister running a bar, holding a dog food drive to collect food for the local lost dogs home in memory of their deceased parents, the local rich people who want recognition for their donation, secret relationships and so on. The cast are all hilariously browned up with foundation to give the impression of the ...

The Fall is the story of Herod Sondheim Rockefeller, a well known, liked and respected defense lawyer who finds great joy in giving. But what happens when he starts to question the sincerity of gratitude? Written and performed by Giuliano Ferla, directed by Mark Wilson and with music by Tom Pitts, The Fall is presented in the form of an extended monologue. It is a brutally honest and confronting confession detailing his journey from philanthropist to miscreant. Partially inspired by the book of the same title by Albert Camus. Dates: July 10th-12th, and 17th-19th, 2009 Time: Performance begins at 8pm sharp. Doors open from ...
I spotted this last night as I walked by. ‘Jesus the Arrogant – an indie rock musical’ opens tonight at the (Newtown) Workers Club on the corner of Brunswick St and Gertrude St. It amuses me to note that the venue is now being described as the ‘Workers Club’ without ‘Newtown’, although the signage has not been changed. The decision to name the venue the ‘Newtown Workers Club’ did not work as it confused people who knew the Newtown name because of the Newtown Social Club cafe. Fitzroyalty - hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 by Brian Ward is ...

The Italianate style Fitzroy Town Hall is one of Melbourne’s most attractive and imposing buildings. Erected in two stages, it was opened in 1874 and embodies the highest standards of a style which epitomises the Victorian age. The ornate clock tower and the grand Corinthian columns and temple form, echo imperial Rome and present an unusual composition.

Friday evening saw me dropping in at RRR for a quick drink with Kim Jurick, who's stepping down from the Music Coordinator's position he's held for a year; and receiving the excellent news that the station would like me to host its annual Intrepid Travel trip later this year. It was a huge surprise and an honour to be asked, and also a much-needed morale booster given that I've had the week from hell at work this week. The country we'll be visiting has yet to be determined, with Egypt, Morocco and Cuba all possible at this stage, as I undestand ...
