Dont be fooled by the name Willowan Lights if it conjures up images of hippies dancing around to 1970s folk music with flowers in their hands. Willowan Lights sound couldnt be further from those images. The sound is an original and unique mixture of complex guitar instrumentals combined with catchy melodies. In 2004 school friends Josh Storham, Jon Sordello and Dave Jesser attended a private party. The band playing for the night welcomed the trio to get up and jam whilst they took a break. The response was so overwhelming that the beginning of Willowan Lights was formed. Early 2009 bass ...

before I went to HK. I seem to not be able to remember it. Well, not too well. That and I am hungover after being awake for more than two days, unable to sleep on a plane and being generally…well…drunk. I love Singapore Airlines. Moreso, I love Melbourne tap water, after being the boiling queen, it seems like a revelation to not squint and taste someone else’s metallic pee when sucking liquid straight from the sink. My brain is telling me that this was lunch at St Jude’s and I eated courtesy of them, so I guess, I can’t really say anything else other than ...
A mass demonstration is taking place on Tuesday 23 February 2010 in response to recent Liquor Licensing Laws and their consequences on the much cherished local music scene. This rally is not just for musicians, but all those that support and love the arts. Everyone will suffer if simple, yet unique pleasures like going to watch a live band are slowly stripped away from us. So meet at 4pm at the State Library for the march to Parliament House. Following the speeches at Parliament house, it makes sense that the camaraderie and mutual respect continues just three blocks up the way ...
to Andrew McConnell. I am sure everyone loves him because he is the Chef of the Year and such. People rave about his restaurants and find it difficult to get a booking, but this experience, moreso than the others, made me want to get down on one knee. Ok, I don’t believe in marriage, but maybe get down on one knee and ask for his surf clam bouillabaisse recipe which went along-side my main. Sigh. It was…a religious experience. It was a plate-licking experience. We’ll start from the beginning, shall we? Yes, we sat at the bar and had a few drinks before we started. Why not? ...
Sarah Noori was recently awarded an Intel Computer Clubhouse Network C2C scholarship. The scholarship, valued at US$5000 is awarded to Computer Clubhouse members around the world and will assist Sarah as she continues her studies in Biomedical Science at La Trobe University. Sarah and her family arrived in Australiain 2001 from Afghanistan and the Fitzroy Learning Network was one of the first organisations to assist the family with accommodation and schooling. One of the very first members of the Fitzroy Computer Clubhouse when it opened, Sarah says the clubhouse was a great support from the very beginning. “As I was illiterate in ...

I usually reserve Sundays as me-time. As time to read, reflect, drink on my own, recover or wander about aimlessly and secretly creep into a gym and sweat off the previous night’s discretions. This weekend saw none of that, ok, maybe the very controlled exercise, but I finally had a belated catch-up with my favourite cousin. And yes, I have a favourite cousin, people claim they don’t have favourites, but they’re lying. They’re all lying and I can admit that I am shallow. It was all planned, a late afternoon breakfast/lunch depending on how disgusting we got the night before. That being said, ...
For those of you who are cool or like to have an excuse to wear lycra, polyester or things with sequins, then you were probably at Roller Disco last Saturday. For those of you who like to have an excuse to roller blade throughout the city without getting entirely beaten up for being “a fag,” then you were probably at Roller Disco last Saturday. For those of you who just like shiny things, or are addicted to your Facecrack events, then, you were probably at Roller Disco last Saturday. I…well, I was at work. And then I partied on a roof somewhere and didn’t ...

Sure, it’s not your typical Sunday lunch, as the Lincoln family noted, but it was a lunch nonetheless. Something different, new and in the day-time: something we’re not used to seeing each other in. This is the fourth Sunday lunch that Cutler and Co have held and it is something more casual, an encouragement of booze, or perhaps that is the company I keep. The seven of us, occupying a booth usually reserved for six started our day with a few pints at the Worker’s Club. On being seated, as casual as the service appears, it isn’t. It’s still polished, noticeably ...
CATCH THE 112 DOWN BRUNSWICK STREET AND GET OFF AT THE CORNER OF ROSE. Looking east you’ve got two choices – Bimbos pizza bar to your right, the Vegie Bar to your left. Now they say when in doubt go left, and if you’re hungry, it’s a solid principle to stick by. The Vegie Bar is a staple venue down here in the heart of fashionable Fitzroy. It’s gritty, yet oddly sophisticated, without the frills. Plastered across its cracked brick walls is an artistic collage of poster bills for upcoming gigs of bands found around town, and old copper pipes add rustic ...
On Friday the 24th of October, The Workers Club will launch its very own art gallery space ‘Through the Looking Glass’. Every month an artist will be given the opportunity to display an installation in the space which is just over a meter wide. Vicky Yuan is first in line, her piece Kitty Kitty Bang Bang is an obituary, offering and lament for a cat who departed before his prime. Please join us for the launch next Friday – in true ...
Bebida (325 Smith Street), the Fitzroy Tapas bar and cafe is the home of one of my favourite Melbourne meals. Luckily (for them) I am not reviewing their dinner/tapas menu – please don’t call it tapas when you obviously cannot master the Spanish cuisine- but their breakfast. More so, their piece de la resistance – Huevos con Jamon. A breakfast so perfect that I honestly cannot tell you anything about the other items on the menu; haven’t ordered anything else, and (if I don’t develop an allergy against prosciutto, or god help me – eggs) I probably never will. Just say the words; Huevos ...

In Melbourne today- rain, rain, and more rain. But the weekend is just around the corner and the weather forecast calls for plenty of sunshine… So If you haven’t already penciled yourself in for the weekend and you’re looking for something do to- here’s my suggestion for Saturday/Sunday. Visit the Rose Street Artists Market in Fitzroy and make sure you check out Greg’s concession- he designs jewelery with materials used from cutlery, forks and tea spoons.

The roasting room at Eureka Coffee Over the course of the last few weeks my mind has been literally overwhelmed with information about the product I love. While I have always had suspicions of just how complicated the industry is, I am beginning to realise just how little I know. Today I sat in on a roasting with owner of Eureka Coffee, Mark Ryan. The cosy interior of their St Georges Rd shopfront is home to a 15kg roaster in its back room, and I had the pleasure of watching it in action this morning. Eureka Coffee is a specialty coffee company ...
How do you fix 3 years of utter stupidity? I know how dumb I acted, I know it was wrong, I’m a fool. There’s a set if eyes that I swear could kill me just by looking at me if they wanted. I’m way too scared to look back into them, as I’m not sure if it’s anger or disappointment that I see when they look at me, maybe just utter disdain for my existence? I hate seeing that look, it scares me, even worse coming from a stranger. I’ve done some utterly stupid, regretful, idiotic things in the ...

Brothers Sam and Adam Sherry form haunting, dischordal, subterranean two piece A Dead Forest Index. Their songs are pulled from another time, from fragments of dreams, drawn shadows and long travels. The drums are moving, changing shape, underpinning the delayed formless, percussive guitar. Vocals echo above and overlap creating a powerful and original sound. They perform Wednesday nights in November at The Workers Club supported by an array of unique and interesting artists. Doors at 8pm, tickets $6 on the door. 4th w/ ITA + Extreme Wheeze 11th w/ Francis Plagne + Poor People 18th w/ Our Anatomy + Shoes in Bed 24th w/ Tantrums ...
