Sometimes I wish I were a DJ so I could say, “No requests!” But, I’m not. The reason for this is, sometimes, you meet people in the food industry that say, “Don’t say that, don’t write this, don’t put that picture on your blog,” or, inversely ask you to specifically state (sometimes irrelevant) information. This post, on the other hand has been taken under consideration, marred (or beneficial to you who will experience the dinners) by conversation. Of course, one could argue that most of my posts have been marred by conversation, as most of the time, there will be a meeting ...

2010 newlyweds, The Lights, finally find a place to settle down this month! The blushing passion-popsters take residence at The Workers Club on Wednesdays September 1, 8 and 15. This residency also sees The Lights carry over the threshold their brand new bass player: Richard Payne brings a handsome dowry of Britpop cred, as both The Bluetones’ and Dodgy’s keys player. So do pay them a visit. The Lights have got more than enough fruitcake and bubbly to go round. Wednesday, 1 September Doors: 8:00pm
With my explicit admittance of defeat, slump into sadness and inability to reach out to those around me, I have also pulled back from discovering new things. After a 4 moth hiatus from the Slow Food Market and the confirmation of having torn the ligaments in my foot, I am convinced through a series of tweets to hop a bus go to the convent. There, I am greeted by Essjayeff, highly efficient and equally caffeinated, having completed her market shop by half nine. She also made it to the front of the coffee line where I am told that my Tweet-order of ...

When asked what she is looking forward to most about attending the Teen Summit it’s not the candy corns, overseas trip or even escaping the Melbourne winter for a US summer that Marie, 16 mentions, she says she’s “looking forward to meeting IT professionals, like from Google. That’s really exciting as I’m looking towards that kind of area for future work and that’s really exciting. Also meeting new people and using new software.” Marie is one of three teen leaders who have been chosen to represent the Fitzroy Computer Clubhouse at the Intel Computer Clubhouse Teen Summit in Boston, USA. Hanna, 16 and ...
Opening Night Thursday 17 June, 6:30pm – 8:30pm Following the success of her debut solo exhibition Where the Dry Leaves Fall at Gorker Gallery in 2008, Leah Bartholomew presents her new body of work These are the Days in her second solo exhibition. These are the Days is an intimate exploration of the small, special moments that binds us together in friendship and create a sense of place. The prints, collages and paper sculptures delicately handcrafted by Bartholomew tell the story of a protracted coming of age, anchored in the landscapes of both experience and imagination. From poetic scenes such as the group ...
You may or may not know that I basically live here. I’m not just furniture, I should be paying rent. Not only can you just sit at the bar and be a fool, go through the internet with Jamie and talk way too much crap with everyone else in the hospitality industry, but you can get pretty tanked with my housemate who works here and stumble home with your dignity still in tact. If you haven’t been to eat their amazing food, do so. I had lasagne here the other night which was not just magical, but life-changing. That being said, it is ...
We all had a laugh at Ross’ misfortune in the Epicure when they published his name incorrectly, not because we don’t love him, but because it just confirmed to us that the nicest guys always get short changed. A few head shakes, 5 weeks of working eleven shifts a week, back-to-back and Ross finally gets himself a new sous chef, an apprentice and a day off. So, what better way to celebrate than decide on a local boozy lunch for the both of us to finally catch up when I am not drunk and distraught, stumbling into the kitchen during dinner service ...
Something from before HK. It all started from a tweet that I didn’t quite register from the Gertrude St Enoteca. “Hey all you food bloggers and tweeters… Anton, Tom , Kerry & James here now. Wine, food. Drop in!!! http://yfrog.com/1ezk6hmj” I was meeting a friend there for a boozy, Monday lunch as it was both our days off and it was bloody hot. We originally thought it would be a great idea to sit at the Cutler bar and drink lillet blanc, but alas, Cutler is closed on the Monday. Anyways, we rocked up at 4pm and this is what happened: Needless to say, ...
The music room at the Fitzroy Computer Clubhouse is just one of the many spaces where clubhouse members can learn by creating and express themselves in a positive and creative way. Through the introduction of the music room space, to the kind donation of a keyboard, microphone and other music room equipment, youth have been able to tell their stories, experiences and feelings through music with the support of adult mentors. The music room will now enter another stage of development through a grant offered by the The Readings Foundation. This grant will enable us to soundproof the studio, make the floor ...
It’s been a few months now since Rita Micali’s new venture, Supermaxi, opened it’s doors. I’ve been back a few times now, so lets have a look beyond first impressions. I’ve dined alone at the bar, with a friend a couple of times and with a group including children. Am I a fan of the “grunge” styling? I’m not sure I am. All that has changed is the letters that spelled out the previous tenants name – Tugra Restaurant – midnight haunt of hungry cabbies, have been removed. The colour is quite hideous in my opinion. But being next to ...

Red Letter Day, Talihina Sky and The Hollow Kings will be hitting the Workers Club this Thursday the 22nd of April for an exciting evening of indie rock noise and debauchery. Opening the night will be local garage rock revivalists The Hollow Kings, with their Dan Kelly inspired musings; followed by the fresh new outfit from Melbourne’s north-east, Talihina Sky, who deliver a punchy blend of melodic hooks and captivating rhythms, drawing comparisons to current triple j stalwarts The Temper Trap, and a ‘Youth and Young Manhood’ era Kings of Leon. Red Letter Day will complete the ...

Dont be fooled by the name Willowan Lights if it conjures up images of hippies dancing around to 1970s folk music with flowers in their hands. Willowan Lights sound couldnt be further from those images. The sound is an original and unique mixture of complex guitar instrumentals combined with catchy melodies. In 2004 school friends Josh Storham, Jon Sordello and Dave Jesser attended a private party. The band playing for the night welcomed the trio to get up and jam whilst they took a break. The response was so overwhelming that the beginning of Willowan Lights was formed. Early 2009 bass ...
before I went to HK. I seem to not be able to remember it. Well, not too well. That and I am hungover after being awake for more than two days, unable to sleep on a plane and being generally…well…drunk. I love Singapore Airlines. Moreso, I love Melbourne tap water, after being the boiling queen, it seems like a revelation to not squint and taste someone else’s metallic pee when sucking liquid straight from the sink. My brain is telling me that this was lunch at St Jude’s and I eated courtesy of them, so I guess, I can’t really say anything else other than ...
A mass demonstration is taking place on Tuesday 23 February 2010 in response to recent Liquor Licensing Laws and their consequences on the much cherished local music scene. This rally is not just for musicians, but all those that support and love the arts. Everyone will suffer if simple, yet unique pleasures like going to watch a live band are slowly stripped away from us. So meet at 4pm at the State Library for the march to Parliament House. Following the speeches at Parliament house, it makes sense that the camaraderie and mutual respect continues just three blocks up the way ...
to Andrew McConnell. I am sure everyone loves him because he is the Chef of the Year and such. People rave about his restaurants and find it difficult to get a booking, but this experience, moreso than the others, made me want to get down on one knee. Ok, I don’t believe in marriage, but maybe get down on one knee and ask for his surf clam bouillabaisse recipe which went along-side my main. Sigh. It was…a religious experience. It was a plate-licking experience. We’ll start from the beginning, shall we? Yes, we sat at the bar and had a few drinks before we started. Why not? ...
Sarah Noori was recently awarded an Intel Computer Clubhouse Network C2C scholarship. The scholarship, valued at US$5000 is awarded to Computer Clubhouse members around the world and will assist Sarah as she continues her studies in Biomedical Science at La Trobe University. Sarah and her family arrived in Australiain 2001 from Afghanistan and the Fitzroy Learning Network was one of the first organisations to assist the family with accommodation and schooling. One of the very first members of the Fitzroy Computer Clubhouse when it opened, Sarah says the clubhouse was a great support from the very beginning. “As I was illiterate in ...

I usually reserve Sundays as me-time. As time to read, reflect, drink on my own, recover or wander about aimlessly and secretly creep into a gym and sweat off the previous night’s discretions. This weekend saw none of that, ok, maybe the very controlled exercise, but I finally had a belated catch-up with my favourite cousin. And yes, I have a favourite cousin, people claim they don’t have favourites, but they’re lying. They’re all lying and I can admit that I am shallow. It was all planned, a late afternoon breakfast/lunch depending on how disgusting we got the night before. That being said, ...
For those of you who are cool or like to have an excuse to wear lycra, polyester or things with sequins, then you were probably at Roller Disco last Saturday. For those of you who like to have an excuse to roller blade throughout the city without getting entirely beaten up for being “a fag,” then you were probably at Roller Disco last Saturday. For those of you who just like shiny things, or are addicted to your Facecrack events, then, you were probably at Roller Disco last Saturday. I…well, I was at work. And then I partied on a roof somewhere and didn’t ...
