Archives for “wine”

Look what I found.

Something from before HK. It all started from a tweet that I didn’t quite register from the Gertrude St Enoteca. “Hey all you food bloggers and tweeters… Anton, Tom , Kerry & James here now. Wine, food. Drop in!!! http://yfrog.com/1ezk6hmj” I was meeting a friend there for a boozy, Monday lunch as it was both our days off and it was bloody hot.  We originally thought it would be a great idea to sit at the Cutler bar and drink lillet blanc, but alas, Cutler is closed on the Monday. Anyways, we rocked up at 4pm and this is what happened: Needless to say, ...

I don’t know the history of this impressive building on Nicholson St, North Fitzroy. In recent years it has contained a variety of hospitality businesses. Until mid 2009 it was a Mexican restaurant I never got around to trying. It’s now the Fireflies bar and restaurant, where I had a crisp viognier with a friend recently. She raved about the food, and I’ll be back soon to try it! Blackhearts and Sparrows, rather like Bottega Tasca at 321 Lygon Street, Carlton (which specialises in European varieties like tempranillo and sangiovese from Australian and international producers), is my kind of wine shop. It carries many different varieties, so those of us sick of generic shiraz and cabernet sauvignon can find Australian and imported monastrell, barbera and other delights. While the selection at Piedimontes is way above average for a supermarket, if you want something more distinctive Blackhearts and Sparrows on Scotchmer St is the place to go. Birdy Eating My Thoughts Away

Birdman Eating 238 Gertrude St, Fitzroy birdmaneating.com.au Gertrude St is a statement; in hair, in fashion and no doubt, in taste.  So many fab places to choose from. A hot summer evening calls for some nibbles and good wine. Birdman Eating certainly delivered. I drowned out my sorrows and post-exam stress with the most uplifting, sparkly and playful cidre I have ever tried. Pear cidre-not to be missed. Honestly, I don’t recall much of the food. A few scallops, some calamari salad, quail and comforting zucchini fritters. Despite me being in a world of my own, the food was comforting. Very. ...

Sunday Lunch.

Sure, it’s not your typical Sunday lunch, as the Lincoln family noted, but it was a lunch nonetheless.  Something different, new and in the day-time: something we’re not used to seeing each other in. This is the fourth Sunday lunch that Cutler and Co have held and it is something more casual, an encouragement of booze, or perhaps that is the company I keep.  The seven of us, occupying a booth usually reserved for six started our day with a few pints at the Worker’s Club.  On being seated, as casual as the service appears, it isn’t.  It’s still polished, noticeably ...

"Nobody told you guys that tonight is Feed Me night?" asked our server. Now, we're all confused. It works this way: they will ask you if you have allergies and budget per head. The food will keep coming until your budget runs out or til you say halt. Simple yet complicated on so many levels. Drinks are not included by the way. After discussing the budget and wine with PM, we waited for our first dish to arrive. This is my second time at The Commoner. The first time being so exhausted with shopping at Brunswick and starving, I managed ...

St Judes Wine Cellar- Fitzroy

389-391 Brunswick Street, Fitzroywww.stjudescellars.com.auLike any good Melbournian, I am an avid reader of the Age's Epicure, and will sometimes even visit the lovely looking restaurants that grace the hallowed pages, particularly if they are on my side of the river.I was recently in dire need of treating my significant other to a fancy meal. Based on our mutual love of vino and the Epicure's recommendation, I decided to give St Jude's Wine Cellar a test drive.St Jude's has been around since March 2008, and isn't really the new kid on the block anymore. There are many reviews out there, some ...

Love Me, Love Me Not 2009-08-19 00:53:00

I'm staying up late for a secret mission at approximately 0305 hours, so I'm cleaning my house and wasting time on the internet. Here's a cute thing I stole from Pip of Meet Me At Mike's.This past week, here's what I've been...Making: owl mittens.Cooking: chocolate and almond torte for my mother's 50th birthday celebrations on Sunday.Drinking: rotgut red wine with a new friend, and Cascade Green with an old friend.Reading: Cafe Europa by Slavenka Drakulić - a series of essays on life in post-Communist Eastern Europe.Wanting: a holiday.Looking: at the pretty night sky in the street behind my house.Playing: ...

I made a booking at Anada a few days back through their answering machine. They called to confirm three times but I wasn't able to answer their calls. I really thought that I would need to switch to another place for dinner. Good thing was they were patient and called a few hours before my reservation. And the best thing was, they gave me a table instead of just some place at the bar since I'll be dining alone. For that, I'm really grateful to have my own table and enjoy the food.Anada is a bustling little place along Gertrude ...

drinks at the Monkey bar on St George’s Rd

Having spotted a new bar on St George’s Rd several weeks ago and, admiring how cosy the interior looked, I organised to meet friends for a drink. The Monkey bar in North Fitzroy is next door to the Moroccan Soup Bar, which in itself should make it easily noticed. The nearby Deco bar used to be the main waiting room for tables at the Moroccan; now diners have a choice. But Monkey is more than a prelude or afterword to dinner. They have some fabulous Victorian wines on their list and lots of cute monkey totems scattered around the bar. ...

Back on the blog – CHEERS!

OK, so I realise Gosstronomy has been all quiet on the gestation front this past year. And I know, I owe everyone an explanation. A blogger can’t just disappear into the ethernet and go without saying a word. I have seen the folly of my ways, and I am back asking for forgiveness. Right, ready? The sad truth is this – I got a real job. “No!” you say. “Mon dieu.” “Bastarde.” “Oy gevalt.” Well, my parents said “About time” as I set about helping Lonely Planet transform its famed travel guidebooks and figure out ways to allow people to access the ...

Tugra Turkish restaurant on St George’s Rd is a fantastic and under-appreciated place in North Fitzroy. It opened several years ago in a space formerly occupied by a Chinese dumpling place that looked very uninviting. It seemed to do reasonable business, at least for takeaway, but then closed for an extended period of time. It reopened in early 2008 (as far as I can remember) and continues to serve great Turkish food. On a recent Friday night I had a casual dinner with friends who live across the road from Tugra. They bought takeaway and I brought a bottle of ...

the most reviewed restaurant in Fitzroy

I’ve been busy tagging articles and blog posts about restaurants (and other businesses and anything to do with Fitzroy and the nearby area) in the Fitzroyalty bookmarks on del.icio.us. I’m doing this for two reasons: first to build a flexible and easy to browse index of reviews for the public to use, and second to be able to start mining the data it generates. Why use del.icio.us? Because it is convenient: why build my own database when there is a really great one freely available online that many people know how to use? My purpose is to make this database of ...

Ink seafood restaurant

Ink seafood restaurant (single page site only, no menus Update 24 July 2008 – Ink now have a beautiful looking website with menus) is located on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Rae St in the southern border of North Fitzroy. Alexandra Parade divides Fitzroy and North Fitzroy and is not the greatest location for a restaurant – several lanes of constant traffic, no other entertainment venues on the same block and little passing foot traffic compared to Brunswick St or St George’s Rd. This is probably why I’ve looked at it from across the road many times and made a ...

There are three types of people. There are those who buy expensive d’object like gold-plated Philippe Starck AK47 lampstands and will spend well into five or six figures on interior design. There are the kind of people who read Ready Made who buy a plastic $30 toy AK47 on ebay, spray it gold and make it into a lamp stand (although unfortunately it illuminates itself to be anything but the original when switched on). The there are the people who go: “Sod Philippe Starck. Somebody gave me his beautiful and iconic orange juicer (the one that looks like a Tintin rocket) but as ...
