About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - a hyperlocal blog about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - began in May 2006. It is a local blog for local people; we'll have no shouting here!

It features posts on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

farewell machine gun fellatio

Posted in music on June 24th, 2006

Apparently Machine Gun Fellatio are no more… they were my favourite Australian band. The end was nigh when the Widow Jones left. May their porn-techno tunes enliven parties for many more years…

Beautiful winter mornings begin with fog. The city is hidden; the world is close and smaller in appearance than reality. I could stand on the balcony and be wrapped in it if I could stand the cold.

I really don’t understand, but I do find it curious.

Smith st

Posted in Collingwood, Fitzroy, Smith St, cars on June 10th, 2006

Walking along Smith st is always amusing and educational. The shops change a bit, though not as much as on Brunswick St. There’s always a photo opportunity. I went to the Safeway today, and dug out this photo from a year ago to illustrate this post.

Low: dragonfly pills

Posted in Brunswick, Lygon St, music on June 8th, 2006

Last night I saw the US band Low at the East Brunswick Club Hotel. A great show! All the emo kids were there - all pale, polite and almost hyponotised by the beautiful music. The songs from their last album The Great Destroyer rocked - louder, rougher and more Neil Young than previous songs. Their older music made the Velvet Underground sound like the Ramones.

I remember seeing Low in Perth in 2001. I had been a fan for only a short time, had a new girlfriend, it was a hot summer and they were playing an outdoor night gig at a festival venue in the city. I thought it would be perfect. Unfortunately, it was a strangely cold night, my girlfriend was wearing something frilly and was therefore cold, and we left early. I was disappointed to miss the end of the gig; she was bored and wanted to go home.

Move forward 5 years. I live in Melbourne, have a different life and a very different relationship. My current girlfriend loved Low, though she felt drawn to lying down to listen to the slow music. So did I. The floor of a pub is not the best place to lie down, however, so we managed to sway and stand along with everyone else. A great gig.

Melbourne Central

Posted in Melbourne, customer service, film on June 4th, 2006

I love the Melbourne Central development. My favourite shop is Anton’s who have the best men’s clothes I have ever seen, and also the most delightful staff.

I went to see X Men 3 today at the Hoyts cinema in Melbourne Central with my friend Carlie. It’s ok, but with the usual sin of too much cgi and too little narrative.
