About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - a hyperlocal blog about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - began in May 2006. It is a local blog for local people; we'll have no shouting here!

It features posts on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

this is hardcore

Posted in Melbourne, film, music on December 31st, 2006

I love SBS. I thank them for playing the 2004 Greek film Hardcore on Friday night, which I first saw at the 2005 Greek FIlm Festival in Melbourne. It’s about two teenage prostitutes, their life on the streets and their dangerous aquaintances. They’re definitely trouble.

The film brings to mind the lyrics of Pulp composer Jarvis Cocker - particularly his lyrics to the title song of their 1998 album This is Hardcore:

You are hardcore, you make me hard.
You name the drama and I’ll play the part.
It seems I saw you in some teenage wet dream.
I like your get up if you know what I mean.
I want it bad. I want it now.
Oh can’t you see I’m ready now.
I’ve seen all the pictures,
I’ve studied them forever.
I wanna make a movie so let’s star in it
together.
Don’t make a move ’til I say, “Action.”
Oh, here comes the Hardcore life.
Put your money where your mouth is tonight.
Leave your make-up on & I’ll leave on the light.

My colleague Lana is so talented and versatile! On Friday December 29 she was doing her human statue performance in the Bourke St Mall to the delight of many.

face to face

Faces are endlessly fascinating. Whether real or imaginary, faces focus the eye on the expression of emotion and signs of personality: the pout of lips, the curve of eyebrows, and the daydream expression.

Kindness Lane is one of many magical lanes that contains some of the best street art in Fitzroy.

prosecutors will be offended

Posted in Fitzroy, Victoria St, business, media on December 27th, 2006

On many walls around Fitzroy you may see signs saying ‘Bill posting is not allowed - offenders will be prosecuted’. While I sympathise with property owners to an extent, I also like the irreverent approach of ‘The What’s on Wall’ on Victoria St in Fitzroy. It encourages bill posting. The prosecutors will be offended.

The Centre for Contemporary Photography is the perfect place to stop and visit as you amble down George St (it’s on the corner with Kerr St) in Fitzroy.

They are advertising a new Projection Window that is viewable all night from the street, so I will go a have a look at that very soon!
