I love wandering the streets at different times - day and night - loud and quiet. Scenes and images pass before me and I am drawn to creating fragmented narratives in my mind to piece together and give meaning to things I have seen.

People have moved: together or apart, from one home to another, and they obviously no longer need these beds, which now lie discarded in a Carlton lane. There’s a sadness to this type of waste - wasted resources and wasted opportunities. Perhaps the people who abandoned these beds tried to donate them to charity, but the charities seem to becoming increasingly fussy and didn’t want them. They look clean and undamaged. So much of this story is missing.

About ten years ago, a Melbourne artist (can’t remember his name…) did a series of portraits of abandonned matresses.

A discarded mattress has so much more pathos than the other stuff that gets dumped on the street and especially so, when it is a single.
