The sunset of Tuesday January 9 was one of the most extraordinary I have ever seen. These shots are not altered in any way – only cropped to fit.

playing safe in a dangerous world

In 1992-1994 I worked for the Family Planning Association WA as a sexuality educator for a youth peer sex education project called Promoting Adolescent Sexual Health (PASH). I looked it up recently and was pleased to see that it still exists.

My friend, academic and comedian Nelly Thomas, has more recently been performing a show called The Condom Dialogues, which uses comedy as a way to communicate a strong sexual health message.

When read the January 9 Age article What happened to safe sex?

I’m a regular visitor to the NGV, and recently went to see the free exhibition Sneakers: Classics to Customs. It’s a really clever idea, and well executed, and it’s a shame that all the kids, teenagers and parents downstairs for the Tezuka anime/manga exhibition did not go upstairs to see this. I was also pleased to see a pair of Onitsuka Tiger sneakers there – they’re my current favourites.

At special exhibitions and for all fragile works, photography is forbidden as flash lights can damage the works.…

Sunday January 7 was a strangely cold and wet day, and the traffic and vibe on and around Chapel St was relaxed. I had an excellent coffee at Fog on Greville St, and must go back there to eat sometime – the menu looked enticing. Meanwhile, back on Chapel St, this traffic sign had escaped from nearby Macquarie St and was having a rest on a street bench.

Nokia, I look forward to your future bankruptcy

Bowie. Obsession. Devotion. Disillusion. Nokia has hired David Bowie to be the marketing voice of its new digital music download service, called Music Recommenders. The promotional film is by Wim Wenders. Nice synergy.

It’s a shame about the technical specifications. The service requires Windows 2000 or XP and IE browser. To use Firefox, you have to install a plugin and follow some tedious instructions. If you try to load the website on a PC and you don’t meet the tech specs you go here, which tells you all this and what you need to do.…

I’m a fan of the Croft Institute, and visit occasionally, especially because it is a great place to take visitors. They also make a delicious vodka and apple cocktail. I saw the above poster in the city the other day, and it reminded me of a similar picture, below, that I took years ago – it’s amazing how fast time passes!

a tale of two restaurants

My girlfriend and I planned to eat at Longrain on Little Bourke St on the night of Thursday January 4. We arrived, stood in the entrance and waited politely. The maitre de was being an idiot – joking around with the group of four in front of us. He completely ignored us, failing to even make friendly eye contact to acknowledge that he had more customers he needed to attend to. After another minute we walked out.…

media docklands

On Friday afternoon after leaving work I was sitting at the tram stop at the western end of La Trobe St waiting for the 86. Opposite is the Telstra Dome and Channel 7. At about 5.30 pm the Channel 7 helicopter quickly descended and briefly landed out the front of the building on the corner of La Trobe St and Docklands Drive.

Someone ran out to meet the helicopter, and the exchange was made – a tape of a new story just shot on board was handed over.…

giving blood

Between Christmas and New Year I went to the Bourke St Red Cross Blood Service to donate blood; something I had not done for about nine months. I’m a natural bleeder, and the staff are surprised at how fast my blood fills the collection bag. The needle does not make me nervous and I am a healthy adult who can easily do a very good thing with little effort or inconvenience to myself. Or at least that is the theory.…
