watching the Oscars at the Nova

On Monday I went to the special live broadcast of the 79th Academy Awards at the Nova cinema. Lots of drinks, some good food, and several hours of watching vacuous space cadets. They were the staff of local distribution companies screaming at each other about how much more money they were going to make if the films they distribute in Australia win awards.

ruling the world

Posted in media, music, social issues on February 26th, 2007

I admit to being out of touch with popular music. Nothing new interests me. The newest artist I am interested in is Peaches and she’s been around for a few years now. Yesterday my girlfriend bought me the new Jarvis Cocker solo album, and we laughed out loud when listening to it. He’s hardly new either but I love hearing something for the first time, then listening over and over.

He must have enjoyed himself a great deal making it. The lyrics are twisted and sardonic, and are as sharp as anything he wrote in his popular Pulp period. There’s a hidden track at the end of CD and the song is called ‘Cunts are still ruling the world’. Apparently it’s been available online since last year. It’s a revelation and the best song on the album.

art is confusing

On Friday night I went to the Metro 5 Gallery on High St Armadale to see Jeff Kennett award two signifcant art prizes to two artists. Unfortunately, I didn’t particularly like anything I saw. That’s the confusing thing about art – it’s so subjective. The wine, however, was quite acceptable.

Anyway, below are the two winners. Immediately below is Giles Alexander’s His Masters Rose Tinted Voice, 2006. Further below is Celeste Chandler’s What Lies Between #2, 2006. I’ve linked directly to the images in the Metro 5 site. If you click on an image you’ll be taken to the page that contains it.

Lygon St pizza

Posted in Carlton, Lygon St, business, coffee, customer service, drink, food on February 24th, 2007

Choosing where to have pizza on Lygon St is a serious issue. Many look and smell good, but the difference in taste can be significant. My favourite three pizza cafes would be Papa Gino’s, Il Corretto and Cafe Trevi.

At Papa Gino’s, the marinara pizza is divine – lots of seafood and lots of garlic. At Il Corretto, I love the volcano – chilli, hot salami – always with a very cold beer. Finally, at Trevi, the priscutto pizza is perfect – thin crisp base, very simple, traditional and delicious. It’s my current favourite. To finish, Trevi make a wonderful espresso.
