About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - a hyperlocal blog about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - began in May 2006. It is a local blog for local people; we'll have no shouting here!

It features posts on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

we are the real terrorists

Hipocrisy. Politics. Brother in arms. We so called liberated rational western liberal democratics are in a moral panic about the so called Islamic threat to our way of life. I think we are the greatest threat to our way of life.

Yes 9/11 was the work of Islamic extremists. But Oklahoma was the work of US Army veteran Timothy McVeigh. Suddenly all terrorists are olive skinned, not white. Terrorism is a tactic of the ‘other’. not of the self. Does it matter if memory of Christian terrorism has quickly faded from the media? Do we care?

We applaude the French government’s policy on Iraq for being less aggressive than that of Australia and the US, and all too easily forget the French government are also terrorists. Remember the bombing of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in 1985?

Many Australians have repeatedly voted in the Howard Liberal government, which has been proven to have lied to its own citizens about ‘children overboard’ and which has allowed one of its own citizens, David Hicks, to be illegally detailed by the US government prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Do we care? Apparently not enough.

Do we care that the insane US-led ‘war on drugs’ is crippling many desperately poor farmers in Afghanistan? Why are we not buying their crops for use in manufacturing medicinal grade morphine that is used in many first world hospitals? In England there is a critical shortage of one form of medical opiate used in palliative care for the terminally ill. What more proof do we need that our stupid ideology will never achieve anything?

I despair.
