youngblood

Posted in Sydney, art, travel on April 30th, 2007

When I was in Sydney recently I was lucky to be able to attend Young Blood – a temporary market for young designers held at the Powerhouse Museum. Artworks, jewellery, fashion and graphic design were available.

The work available is comparable to that of the Rose St Artists Market in Melbourne’s Fitzroy, but Young Blood is only an occasional event, whereas Rose St is open every weekend.

breakfast at Una’s

Posted in Sydney, coffee, customer service, drink, food, travel on April 29th, 2007

Una’s in Darlinghurst is a German / Austrian / Swiss cafe restaurant, which is always full for dinner in the evenings but strangely quiet in the morning for breakfast. I don’t understand why, because they make a great breakfast with very good coffee. I like to have breakfast there to sample the rosti, a Swiss fried potato dish.

The decor inside is quaint, even daggy, but the food is the real message and the food speaks of warmth and satisfaction. The service is always friendly and welcoming, and this makes it a pleasure to return. So if you can’t get in at dinner time, come back for breakfast.

cupcakes and the meaning of life

Posted in Sydney, coffee, drink, food, travel on April 28th, 2007

I’m responsible for writing and photographing some lightweight gastro-porn stories recently. I think it’s because, when I’m travelling for work and don’t really want to be where I am, I try to make the most of the pleasurable opportunities available to me. As a flaneur and indolent dandy, I need to spend some time each day relaxing in a friendly cafe, sampling the coffee and cake, reading, and languidly observing all around me. The novelty of a sticky date cup cake was impossible to ignore.

the joy of art

Posted in Carlton, art on April 27th, 2007

I consider the point of art to be a shared experience of beauty and aesthetic imagination. Art is subjective and all meaning is contingent. A shared art experience is a form of communication, where people learn something of another’s experience of the world. I was fortunate at the Art Melbourne07 art show to meet artist Christine Polowyj when I saw, and instantly became fascinated with, her work ‘Beacon’.

I made enquiries about buying it and then discovered that the artist was on site. Christine asked me about my perception of the work, which shows an appreciation of how works can have different meanings for different people. She told me about her work on the series of small works ‘Beacon’ is a part of. Christine was also kind enough to pose for a picture with her work.
