Qantas frequent flyer social network

Late last year I was looking for a new job, as the bureaucracy at my previous government employer was wasting my time. I wanted to stop pushing idiots from failure to mediocrity and do something more creative and innovative. I am now the Community Manager of a real estate based social network, and consider myself something of an expert in online communications and electronic media strategies.

In seeking new employment I wrote to the head of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, Simon Hickey, and offered my services in implementing a plan to turn the closed database of the frequent flyer program into an open social network.…

losing traction and getting sidetracked

I’ve been monitoring the bizarre (and incompetent) marketing of the posh hospitality area at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix (now formerly) called “GP Traction”. I attended the 2007 F1 GP from there and had a very enjoyable time. Since then, it has not been promoted and in December 2007 the Grand Prix corporation seemed unsure whether it would be offered again.

I was quietly sitting on my sofa at approximately 11.15pm last night idly surfing the interweb when the screech of a skidding car diverted my attention. I waited (in fear or expectation, depending on your point of view) for the skid to end in a crash. It did: a solid crunch of metal on metal. I dashed out to my balcony to see what had happened. A chunky 4WD and a small hatchback had collided on the corner of Rose and Young streets.…

herd animals

The only really bad thing about living in Fitzroy is the herd animal mentality of the weekend visitors. Bogans from the suburbs come to the trendy drinking places and behave in moronic subhuman ways, vomiting in the streets, beating each other, vandalising property and cars and urinating in the street. They scream at each other, the police arrive and disperse the conflicting parties, and then everyone leaves. I don’t have a problem with venue noise, but screaming bogans outside your window at 2am is disgusting.…

taking responsibility

Finally a woman has come out and declared the simple truth about having children: if a woman has children as a high priority and does not have a male partner who also wants to have children, she should plan to do it by herself, including taking full financial responsibility for the decision rather than expecting a man to pay for everything.

what utter twaddle

Anyone with half a scientific brain knows that detox is a new age medical myth. Nonetheless, it is a good myth to use selling tea, especially when people have indulged too much and are feeling somewhat guilty about it (the guilt is another example of pop psychology rubbish).

Rhumbarallas: everything new is old again

Update 28 June 2008: Rhumbarallas is closed again, and has been so for a couple of weeks now. There is a notice in the window referring people to a real estate office. Will we get Bluefin revisited like we got Rhumbarallas revisited? I hope not. Whoever takes over this space needs to significantly rework the interior. It is an awkward space that simply does not work.

There used to be a boring generic cafe on Brunswick St called Rhumbarallas.…
