About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - a hyperlocal blog about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - began in May 2006. It is a local blog for local people; we'll have no shouting here!

It features posts on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

min lokal has max appeal

On Sunday I walked around to George St to sample the breakfast at Min Lokal. Where’s the beef? has already reviewed it, and I was keen to taste the Napoli eggs. Michael obviously has not read about the Wildflour saga on my blog, but I’ll forgive him because I like his work.

I’m excited to report that everything that Michael said about the Napoli eggs is true - it is a miracle of a dish. Absolutely delicious! Sweet and salty tomato sauce with eggs and fetta. My beautiful partner chose the poached eggs with bacon, tomato and avocado and that also seemed very pleasing. The coffee was splendid; one of the best in Fitzroy, and worthy of comparison to Alimentari and Newtown SC. With food this good so close, it will be difficult to walk all the way to Arcadia in future.

I should also mention that when we arrived the place was packed, and we got the last two seats at one of only two large communal tables. The waitress told us that the other table was occupied by one group that was ordering and that would delay our orders. Coffee orders were taken quickly and we were kept up to date with progress. When I get such considerate and professional service I don’t mind waiting, and the food was worth it. I’ll be back.

What a saga, indeed! I remember Michael going on a bit of an internet search for the Wildflour story just before his write-up of Min Lokal, and he didn’t turn up any of your posts. A couple of hints came in via our comments section.

There were only a trickle of customers when we visited and I’m glad to know it’s gaining in popularity. No matter how tucked away, it seems that anything this good can sustain itself on customer loyalty and word-of-mouth in Melbourne. Enjoy your “new local” while you can still nab the last two seats. :-)

I am always impressed by how well you eat. I am envious. And hungry!

(Eating out in London is crap in comparison to Melbourne - overpriced and often disappointing!)
