A few days ago I finally ate at Red Rice, a Vietnamese restaurant with a modern twist on Brunswick St. I’m glad I did – the meal was sensational – and I feel bad that it had taken me so long to try it, because I had accidently denied myself their wonderful food!
The signature dish is the bright red rice (unfortunately I did not have my camera with me), which is achieved with the use of annatto seeds. The rice has a delicious garlic flavour. I had the plum duck, which featured a flat coriander pancake with steamed then crispy fried duck and a plum sauce. Amazing. My girlfriend chose a chilli and lime rice noodle dich that was also delicious.
Red Rice is also reviewed here, here and here. Red Rice does not seem to have its own site but you can see its menu here. I will be returning soon to enjoy some of the other dishes on the menu and will try to get some photos. The service is quick and discrete and there is a lovely warn feel to the quite dimly lit room, which was reasonably full for a Wednesday night. Red Rice is another of Fitzroy’s excellent restaurants and it deserves more blog reviews.
