About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - hyperlocal news and reviews about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - is a local news and reviews site for Fitzroy residents and visitors. Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

It features stories on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

Oscar’s Hotel, Ballarat

ballarat

If you like art deco buildings as I do, then when looking for accommodation in Ballarat you find a restored art deco pub on the interweb, you may be drawn to try Oscar’s Hotel. It’s a deco pub converted into boutique hotel upstairs (13 rooms) and restaurant and bar downstairs.

It’s a place I can thoroughly recommend. We had a lovely large room with an amazingly comfortable bed. The removations have given each room a fantastic bathroom (ours had a huge double shower and separate toilet). The furnishings were simple, elegant and in sympathy with the style of the building.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, and we were upgraded to a larger room on arrival. Our package included breakfast, and we were able to order an item from the complete breakfast menu in the cafe that was not on the package list. My girlfriend loves avocado on toast for breakfast and they had her favourite on the menu, which was actually cheaper than the vegetarian fried breakfast offered in the package. It came with delicious herb roasted tomatoes.

I chose the traditional scrambled eggs and bacon, which was not exceptional but was more than good enough. There’s nothing like getting exactly what you want to make you happy!

Having booked travel and accommodation on the net a lot, I can say that it is also very satisfying to realise that Oscar’s is the kind of place that represents itself accurately on its website – what you see in the pictures is what it really looks like. Oscar’s is a very enjoyable place to stay when visiting Ballarat.
