breakfast at The Commoner

fitzroy

I’ve loved the dinners I’ve had at The Commoner, but sometimes forget that they also do brunch. I managed to remember over the long weekend and was as impressed with their brunch menu as I am with the dinner menu. The news section of their website says that they have a new chef, but the food is just as good!

The main dining room was full but we got a table out the back, which is a lovely space (except for the fact that people can smoke there – The Commoner should go smoke free is what is an outdoor but still enclosed space with restricted air flow). The only benefit of being outside was to see (and smell) the weekend roast being roasted – on Sunday it was the amazing smell of roast pork that made me feel so hungry.

I had the Honky – harissa on bread with bacon, egg, spinach and aioli.

One friend had the Poor Man’s eggs with roasted tomato and peppers and za’atar.

Another had the Cheesy Fingers (with side of Persian fetta). If this makes you hungry don’t forget that The Commoner is open for brunch on the weekends. Apart from the fact they makes amazing dinner and totally get the hyperlocal conversation, breakfast is another reason to love them!

Once again, thanks Brian! Glad you’re still enjoying. The smoking issue is tricky, our options are allowing it in the courtyard or forcing people out the front (just as iffy) or not at all. We did consider the not at all option but ruled it out. I have the same concerns as you and I’m a smoker, albeit a considerate one. The problem lies with people who are less so. If someone was eating at a table close to me I’d move away to a clear area to smoke or I’d wait until they’ve finished eating and then ask them if they minded, however some people just spark up regardless. We may have a think about putting a sign up asking people to consider their fellow diners before lighting up and see how that goes.

On the same subject the overspill from the club next door on the weekends, since the new laws came into effect, is a pain in the arse, same lack of consideration for other people….we regularly have to move people from our street furniture or from sitting in our doorway WHEN WE STILL HAVE CUSTOMERS! Just have to live with it I guess…
