About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - a hyperlocal blog about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - began in May 2006. It is a local blog for local people; we'll have no shouting here!

It features posts on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

dinner at the Rose hotel

Apart from Bimbo Deluxe, the Rose hotel is my traditional local. Can someone explain why it is called the Rose hotel when it is one street away from Rose St on the corner of Napier and Leicester streets? Despite its confusing location, the Rose is well known to locals for providing excellent hearty pub meals at bargain prices. On a cold winter evening when you’re lazy and don’t feel inspired to cook, it is the perfect alternative.

talking PORNO with Hazel Dooney

Posted in Port Melbourne, art, galleries and museums, sex and gender on July 30th, 2008

port-melbourne

Sometimes asking a simple question can have amazing results. I’ve admired artist Hazel Dooney’s work since first seeing it at a gallery in Perth in 2001 (I learned today that this was her first big interstate exhibition). Since the controversy around the censoring of her work at ArtMelbourne07, we’ve exchanged the occasional email and we read each other’s blog.

When I read about her forthcoming first photography exhibition PORNO at Mars Gallery in Port Melbourne, I wondered if it would be possible to meet her in person and further our conversation. It’s so intriguing to meet someone face to face after already learning a little about them from a distance. Can online communications give any clues as to real personality?

Strong attendance at YCAT rally

The YCAT rally on Sunday 27 July 2008 at Smith’s Reserve in Fitzroy was well attended, with about 200 people hearing a variety of speakers provide coherent opinions about what a waste of money building the east-west tunnel would be and how unnecessary it is.

Pinky Beecroft rocks Brunswick again

Posted in Brunswick, Sydney Rd, music, posts containing videos, social networks on July 28th, 2008

Update 1August 2008: Pinky has posted a detailed response to my review on the PB Rectangle, and I have replied to his response. I think we’re still friends?!? I’ve also made some corrections to the text below based on information Pinky provided.

brunswick

The Pinky Beecroft and the White Russians gig at the Brunswick Hotel last Friday night was great but quite strange. The crowd was young, feral and very different to the June gig at the East Brunswick Club, where the audience was older, cleaner and seemingly more informed about the band on stage. At the EBC they were there to see Pinky and the band and to enjoy the new songs, his reworked MGF songs (’Unsent letter’ and ‘Just Bcoz’) and the Blondie cover ‘Call me’.

Smith St now has another local shop for local people selling precious things! A new branch of Memorabilia on Parade (it is related to the shop of the same name in Clifton Hill) has opened near the Smith St bazaar.

managing the underclass

Posted in intelligence, misanthropy, politics, sex and gender, social issues on July 26th, 2008

Update 27 July 2008: I’d been working on this post for about a month, and the very day I published it the Australian newspaper ran a major story covering many of the same topics and ideas, although it fails to acknowledge the role of intelligence in the social problems it discusses.

What is western society to do with the surplus humans that form the underclass? This conservative US article predicts living standards in first world countries will fall in the future based on the premise that western nations waste too much money supporting surplus humans in or from the third world.

I think we do the same thing domestically by constructing social security systems that encourage the underclass to breed and thus exacerbate the problems they cause. Recent social tragedies in Australia have drawn attention to the almost third world plight of some supposedly first world citizens, where children have been neglected, abused and starved to death.

Members of the white bogan underclass breed continuously because they are too stupid to implement family planning strategies to maximise their own economic wellbeing or the future of their children. Their culture refutes any acceptance of personal responsibility.
