About Fitzroyalty

Fitzroyalty - hyperlocal news and reviews about Melbourne’s first suburb: Fitzroy 3065 - is a local news and reviews site for Fitzroy residents and visitors. Read the about and hyperlocal pages for more information.

It features stories on the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia, and reflections on life from a socially libertarian, economically socialist, culturally anarchistic and radically individualistic point of view.

"I hate almost everything you write yet I cannot look away. You’re better than [Andrew] Bolt." User comment.

dinner at the Rose hotel

Apart from Bimbo Deluxe, the Rose hotel is my traditional local. Can someone explain why it is called the Rose hotel when it is one street away from Rose St on the corner of Napier and Leicester streets? Despite its confusing location, the Rose is well known to locals for providing excellent hearty pub meals at bargain prices. On a cold winter evening when you’re lazy and don’t feel inspired to cook, it is the perfect alternative.

talking PORNO with Hazel Dooney

Sometimes asking a simple question can have amazing results. I’ve admired artist Hazel Dooney’s work since first seeing it at a gallery in Perth in 2001 (I learned today that this was her first big interstate exhibition). Since the controversy around the censoring of her work at ArtMelbourne07, we’ve exchanged the occasional email and we read each other’s blog.

It’s so intriguing to meet someone face to face after already learning a little about them from a distance. Can online communications give any clues as to real personality?

The YCAT rally on Sunday 27 July 2008 at Smith’s Reserve in Fitzroy was well attended, with about 200 people hearing a variety of speakers provide coherent opinions about what a waste of money building the east-west tunnel would be and how unnecessary it is.

Pinky Beecroft rocks Brunswick again

Posted in Brunswick, Sydney Rd, music, posts containing videos, social networks on July 28th, 2008

Update 1August 2008: Pinky has posted a detailed response to my review on the PB Rectangle, and I have replied to his response. I think we’re still friends?!? I’ve also made some corrections to the text below based on information Pinky provided.

brunswick

The Pinky Beecroft and the White Russians gig at the Brunswick Hotel last Friday night was great but quite strange. The crowd was young, feral and very different to the June gig at the East Brunswick Club, where the audience was older, cleaner and seemingly more informed about the band on stage. At the EBC they were there to see Pinky and the band and to enjoy the new songs, his reworked MGF songs (‘Unsent letter’ and ‘Just Bcoz’) and the Blondie cover ‘Call me’.
