Why do people keep opening shops that are so very tempting in Fitzroy? So many beautiful books… and not enough time for reading. The Searchers has been around for quite a while now and I hope they continue to survive.

On 28 August 2008 I went to the opening night of the Sneaky 6 exhibition of work by Santha King and various street artists at Gorker gallery. The works are handmade shoes featuring unique designs and they are absolutely beautiful! The exhibition is on until 14 September.…

I missed the news of the opening of the First Look gallery on St George’s Rd in North Fitzroy, and so missed the opening party. When I caught up, I dropped in on a Saturday morning and chatted briefly with owner Bret about the gallery, which features the work of Indigenous artists from the obscure to the famous.…
We live in a society that is soft on violent crime. We excuse aggressive behaviour and do not allow people to adequately protect themselves, their families and their property from assault without fear of being prosecuted for their defensive response.
In a recent case a Sydney man used a whip to defend his property, his family and party guests from violent gatecrashers. He has been warned that he may be charged with the use of excessive force in defending himself.…
A recent paste up on the former cable car building on the corner of Brunswick St and Victoria Parade. A cross between Ziggy Stardust and Adam Ant. Not sure if youre a boy or a girl…

There’s at least two more copies on other walls in Fitzroy.…
In January 2007 I signed up with Australian electronic program guide (EPG) provider icetv.com.au based on a recommendation from a friend and bought an Elgato EyeTV HD DTT USB stick tuner from them so I could watch HD TV via my MacBook Pro.
It worked perfectly until August 2008, when it suddenly failed, and I received the error message “Device could not be initiailized.” Thinking it was a random error, I waited a couple of days for it to fix itself.…

Nine years ago I spent a week in Mauritius for a work junket, and it was a fantastic holiday. I was amazed by the complex culture, with its French, English, Indian and African influences, and the food, including lots of fresh local seafood. Once I saw La Case Creole Delicatessen on SBS’s Food Safari, I had to visit, though it’s taken me a while to make it happen. I’m glad I did, because the food is wonderful.…
I honestly admit to not understanding the entrepreneurial worldview. I am not motivated by greed or power. I don’t seek control of or power over lots of people. I have been described as a natural leader but I don’t want to lead anyone anywhere and I don’t want anyone to follow me. I have thought of starting my own religion, because it is seems to be an easy way to obtain wealth and a hedonistic lifestyle, but I always get stuck on what colour robes to wear.…

In July I attended the Fitzroy History Society’s launch of Gertrude St Fitzroy by Jill Robertson, an 80 page A5 booklet about the history of Gertrude St. Earlier this week in the Leader I read about a new history of Fitzroy written and published by a group of Honours students from the University of Melbourne’s School of Historical Studies, collectively known as the FitzRovians.
Called Reflections of Fitzroy, the book provides stories of everyday struggle and cultural vitality throughout the long history of Melbourne’s first suburb.…
