electroclash mayhem with Peaches at the Palace
Peaches and new backing band Sweet Machine played the Palace (formerly the Metro) on 1 October 2008 and I was there to see her for the third time (previously I saw her at the Corner hotel in Richmond in 2004 and in 2007 at the Prince in St Kilda). It was a brilliant anarchic gig.
She played all the crowd favourites and some new songs from a forthcoming album, and told the crowd Australia was the first place she was playing the new songs.
Guitarist Saskia joined Peaches to sing ‘Shake yer dicks’ and bassist Connor donned a wig and did Iggy Pop’s part in ‘Kick it’.
Peaches has a strong following and the crowd was diverse in age, gender orientation, sexual preference, subcultural affiliation and fashion aesthetics.
Her costumes were similar to last time, featuring aspects of Mexian wresting (masks and boots) followed by multiple layers of leotards that came off one by one to the cheers of the crowd.
She also has a love of capes and there was much theatrical flouncing about in several different versions. Fabulous.
During the gig Peaches climbed up the speaker stacks, and also ran up the side stairs and sang from the balcony and nearly launched herself into the crowd below.
