Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix – the track and paddock at dusk
Dusk was perhaps the most beautiful time in the paddock and on the track at the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix. The track lights had been on since the early afternoon to warm up to full power and as the natural light declined and the sun set behind the city buildings the artificial light began to make everything look magical.
Above is turn 13 (between the two bridges) where many fans enjoyed a fantastic view of the F1 cars blasting over the short Anderson bridge, breaking on an undulating section of track, then accelerating out of the corner and over the much longer Esplanade bridge. It was easy to make a mistake there and one of the Toro Rosso F1 cars ran wide and did a spin to get back on the track while I was there.

The Padang area formed the main entertainment and food area within the track, and was a wonderful space to relax in between sessions on the track. Below is the Padang in the late afternoon as the sun began to set.
What made being in the paddock, particularly the Padang, was that it had been designed to look beautiful; it was not merely a functional space with facilities to provide for thousands of people. The huge lights on stalks were wonderful as it got darker. Various light sculptures (top photo) added to the atmosphere. Even functional signs like this one for the First Aid tent were designed look great.
The Glutton’s Bay food area near the Esplanade building was also lovely at dusk.
