Singapore – art

The Formula 1 Grand Prix was my priority while in Singapore, but I also had the chance to see some art. Because the magnificent Esplanade arts building (at night above, and during the day from the adjacent bridge below) was within the confines of the track, I was able to see an exhibition of prints at the Jendela visual arts space in the building.

The ground floor spaces, including a large informal music performance space as well as arcade shops, were open and provided a deliciously air conditioned escape from the heat outside. I spent most of Sunday within the Esplanade area for this reason. Unfortunately I was not able to visit the library@esplanade – a specialist performing arts library – as the upper floors of the building were closed during the race weekend.

In the Raffles City shopping centre (adjacent to the City Hall MRT train station that I arrived at every day) I spotted some fantastic works making ironic comments about Maoist era China, including these by Chinese artist Liu Chun Hai (photography was not allowed within the Ode to Art gallery but I managed to snap these from outside in the corridor).

On a brief visit to the horrid orgy of high end shopping and overpriced food that is Orchard Rd, I saw this sculpture, called ‘Ballerini’, by Fernando Botero on the street to promote a current exhibition – Master’s Formula – The Artistic Drive at the Opera gallery.

Considering it was not my intention to look for or to see any art while I was in Singapore, I was most impressed by what I accidently found!
