Smith St gentrification

The somewhat shabby but mostly enjoyable Smith St is changing rapidly. Earlier this year the sign in the image below was erected to demarcate the block south of Gertrude St as a fashion and art precinct. More recently, many premises on the block north of Gertrude St have closed, changed tenants or undergone significant alterations.

On the Collingwood side, I’m looking forward to sampling the Japanese food at Wood Spoon Kitchen and the chocolate at Monsieur Truffe (formerly at the Prahran market, and blogged here and here). I’ve already looked at the wonderful Toolz boutique, and I will be looking through the newly expanded (to three levels) Tongue and Groove (more about the  expansion and the product range). On the Fitzroy side, new bars including Yah Yahs have opened, and Vibe has the new A mic in hand comedy night running every Thursday night.
