crepes at The Wick on Brunswick St

I used to love World Wide Wash on Brunswick St. Over time it changed, removing the washing machines in 2006 so that it was no longer a laundromat internet cafe. Then it lost the computers so it was no longer an internet cafe, though now with wifi most cafes can be internet cafes. Then came a change of name to The Wick in 2008. The interior has been repainted and is now darker and more sombre. The only point of continuity is the location and that it makes crepes.

I recently dropped in for a lazy Sunday breakfast and enjoyed a delicious apple and cinnamon crepe. The coffee was good, and my girlfriend also enjoyed her ham cheese and tomato crepe. The service was a bit vague, as we ordered crepes and the waitress turned to leave our table before we could even ask for coffee. We had to call her back. It was strange not to be automatically asked whether we wanted drinks to start with, which happens at most places, and even more so not to be asked once we had ordered. Maybe the waitress was also yet to have her morning coffee.

The Wick features the almost obligatory jumble of op shop retro furniture (in this case so rickety we had to ask to swap the chairs at our table as they were broken). They’re also doing open mic poetry on Thursday nights and have started to offer vegan crepes, which have been positively reviewed.

Do you know if the Wick’s under the same management as wwwash, or has it changed hands?

I’ve been meaning to stop by this new incarnation, and your apple and cinnamon crepe is only stoking my enthusiasm. :-)

Hi Cindy, no I don’t know, though I suspect that it has changed owners.

I gave WWWash a life ban after I sat in there for 15 minutes one day and they wouldn’t serve me. The staff were more interested in drinking beers and talking amongst themselves. I’ll be checking it out if I find out it’s under new management.

It’s under new management. The coffee is good. Good to hear the crepes are satisfying too.

Definitely under new management, and I can vouch for the vegan crepes! And also that the service isn’t frenetic, but I like it’s chilled out vibe.

Hi, I’m Larissa…. i’m the newish owner… almost 6 months now. This is my first business… and first hospitality job so it’s about 80hrs per week of running it all alone most of the time except on weekends when my mum comes in to help out because i can’t really afford staff just yet.

It’s difficult to offer the kind of service you get at most places as they usually have a waitress, chef, manager, and whatever not just 1 person. That’s my own fault for jumping into a business i had no idea about, so i do appologise for the strangeness of it all.

I now have some kind of a system in place… regulars pull their own beers out of the fridge and leave the cash on the counter and some even make their own coffee… probably not the right way to run a successful business.. but it’s what gives it that “just like home” feel and makes it what it is… some kind of business run from my longe room.

Hi Larissa, thanks for letting us know you’re the new owner! For people who don’t visit that often, it has probably not been clear that a change of ownership has occurred. Your crepes are great and I am sure you will continue to get better with experience. It sounds like lots of people are willing to give you a go, and I hope you do well.

Hey Larissa how about an update on how things are going?
