shopping at Coles on Johnston St

On Saturday 29 November the new Coles supermarket opened on Johnston St. My first impression is positive, as it has some carefully thought out features that suit its environment. For example, most of the checkouts are for people carrying baskets who are buying only a few items on their way home. The fruit and vegetables, the deli and the bread are all in the front for easy access. Now that Fitzroy has three supermarkets, I will be publishing a full comparative review soon.

They ran out of onions – all onions – on Sunday. Doh. Had to go to the infamous Smith St Safeway instead.

support small business, go to the IGA or the local Grocery store instead. Coles dont need more money!!!!
It’s places like that, that killed all the suburban milk bars in the 90′s by opening 7 days… and probably what will kill the little independantly run shops in Fitzroy.

I love the little fruit and veg on Brunswick St next to Alimentari, but there are things that you need a supermarket for. For those of us without cars, who shop often buying only what we can carry, more choice is going to be a good thing.

I am stoked with the new car park as part of the coles. For once I can find an all day park around johnston/brunswick without having to get there at some ungodly hour! Sure its 7 bucks, but Im happy to pay to avoid having to move my car every 2 hours. And you get 1 1/2 hr free when you spend $30 at Coles. Just makes life that bit easier hey?

Interesting – thanks for the info – I have not looked at the parking side of things, but this will have an impact on traffic in the area.
