Venus and Mars is everfresh

After some disappointing recent designs, the Venus and Mars wall has been redone by Everfresh studios and is looking amazing again. It’s on Argyle St on the side wall of Venus and Mars on the corner of Brunswick St.

Hmmm…. I have to say that an awful lot of this sort of graffiti is pretty soulless appropriation of others signs and symbols that pertain to a different place a different people and culture.

The nice white middle class hip-hop-alike graffers I find about as noteworthy as the sad sacks who style themselves like south central gangsters when they live in South Yarra.

None of the forms or content of the Wild Style are anything to do with these people.

No doubt this is an unpopular idea, and it will cause concealed discomfort in the mind/soul/heart of those who profit from this ersatz lumpish transplanted art form, who will decry such a thought.

But it doesn’t make it any less true.

The stencil stuff is new and clever, pretending to be a Black B-Boy from The Bronx in 1982 is actually just a bit pitiful.

I’ll reserve judgement on this individual wall as it may reflect the taste of the business owners rather than the artists (I don’t know but I think it is a commissioned work). Everfresh also do things like the recession hairdresser piece so their work is diverse.
