Out There billboard

The Yarra City Council has launched a new public art project, called the Out There billboard. It is located on the corner of Smith and Otter Streets in Collingwood. The press release says:

The first billboard promotes and reflects positive gender models in the community and was produced by Joe Renouf, a young artist engaged in the Jesuit Social Services’ Artful Dodgers Studios.

Thos work will be displayed until March 2009 when it will be replaced by a new one chosen from submitted proposals. The moronic taggers obviously did not read the notes provided beside the work asking for respect for the site and the work it contains.

While good in theory, I suspect that the work is too subtle and unclear; it looks like an incomplete advertising poster that no one would respect. It may be clever that it’s not obviously art but if art doesn’t look like art, particularly street art, other people are not going to treat it as such.

I agree that the work is ambiguous, but I think you’re being overly generous if you imagine that it would not have been tagged if it was more obviously art.

Maybe if it was more obviously ‘street art’ not photography. Maybe I was just being generous because I was in a good mood when I wrote that!
