Update 2 January 2009: both sides of the renovated building now have been leased – one to a nail salon. Ho hum… see the comment below for why this is the case.
Remember this? The photo below is from February 2007 when I wrote about the derelict building next to Polly being renovated.

The next photo shows the building during the renovation.

Months after the building has been completed the ground floor is still empty with ‘for lease’ signs on the windows. Have rents risen to a point where new businesses cannot open on Brunswick St?

Let’s hope so. Not because I don’t want new businesses to open in Brunswick Street, but because I think Brunswick Street is overdue for a rental reality check. Brunswick Street’s stock in trade is innovation, which translates to “risk” whenever money becomes involved. It would be a slow, agonizing death for Brunswick Street if high rents meant that only shops with low risk business models were prepared to open up.
