breakfast at Gutz on Brunswick St
Gutz cafe is one of the quiet achievers on Brunswick St. It’s not full of cool kids comparing sneakers. Like Alimentari and Sila it attracts a diverse clientele who come for the excellent breakfasts. Every few months I go there because I experience a craving for the menemen, a Turkish scrambled eggs dish with onions, tomatoes and capsicums.

The vegetables are sliced and fried until they soften, then the beaten eggs are added and cooked in the usual fashion. It’s served on top of buttered Turkish bread and the sauce from the tomatoes soaks into the bread in a particularly delicious way. Gutz also makes a reasonable coffee and it is worth trying for their Turkish breakfasts (there are other menu items featuring Turkish sausages that are delicious).

One of the delights of Fitzroy is the diversity of choices. I love the consciously quirky Newtown SC and cafe Rosamond and the unconsciously old school Sila as much as the sophistication of The Commoner and Min Lokal. Gutz is different again – part breakfast cafe and part traditional sandwich shop for the rest of the day. One day I will have to try lunch.
