This old Dabs piece on Smith St is starting to look rather scruffy, and it would be great to see it refreshed. Dabs does some extremely colourful work that people enjoy. Being tagged between the eyes doesn’t help. Did someone mention something about graffiti ethics?

After fighting your way through the crowds at today’s garage sale at Rose Chong’s costume hire you can indulge in more alternative clothing and costume goodness at Circa Nocturna tonight from 8pm at the Fitzroy town hall. Tomorrow from 4pm is the new companion event Carnivale Nocturna also at the Fitzroy town hall.

I went to the Fitzroy community garden open day on Saturday 21 February. I got there at 3pm, with the event supposedly running from 10am-4pm. I paid $5 entry at the door, which was a surprise as it was not mentioned in the video they released to advertise the day.
I was disappointed because there seemed to be no event as such – no information sheet, no guided walk, no schedule and no real point in being there.…

People I know in the real world often ask me how I choose the topics I write about. I have to admit to being biased towards things that are new, so if I see a new cafe or business open up near where I live I like to go in and explore, which provides an easy topic to write about. It’s also fun to be the first to review a new place and contribute in a small way to people discovering it, thus helping it to be a success.…
The word on the street is that the owner(s) of the Newtown Social Club cafe are unhappy with the owner(s) of the newly renamed and reopened Rob Roy hotel Newtown Workers Club pub. I can understand why the similarity between the names could cause confusion to unfamiliar customers, and why the cafe could be annoyed at having its innovative use of Fitzroy’s early historical name copied, but I don’t think it will cause any loss of business for the cafe, which is established and much loved by its loyal customers.…
At 83 Brunswick St, one of the seemingly empty terrace shops has started teasing people walking past with signs of life. The curtain is drawn back to reveal a table in the window and a sign for ‘The Penny Rose Boutique’, which stocks hand made olive oil and skin care products.

Radio cafe on Gertrude St make a great coffee, and I love the dark interior. It’s an excellent destination at any time and I hope it will become more popular as the western end of Gertude St is revived.

The well liked and positively reviewed Brunswick St cafe Filter has closed and the space is up for lease. Two years ago it scored an impressive 17/20 from the breakfast blog. More recently, a review from October 2008 by Delishaz criticised the lengthy wait, although the food was still highly regarded. Who will move in next?
