After a fun Saturday afternoon seeing Virus at the Laundry seven friends and I went to La Sangria Spanish bar and restaurant a few doors down for some tapas and sangria. To make things easy we ordered one of every tapas, with two serves of tortilla and garlic prawns. I had to work fast to photograph everything before it was devoured. With a big jug of sangria to share and all this food the cost was less than $20 each, which was fantastic value. The service was friendly and my friends’ baby got a free glass of milk. There’s some great photos on their website of people dancing on the bar – they even have steps that lead up to the bar to facilitate this.

How was the food? I have to say, most of it looks pretty unappetising. A Minor Place in Brunswick has excellent tapas on Saturday evenings.

If it looks unappetising then I have failed as a photographer! It was all delicious. It’s hard to choose between La Sangria and Kanela for tapas, and Colmao is also great.

As a Spanish Australian, who has worked in the hospitality industry both in Oz and Spain – I have to say that La Sangria is FANTASTIC value for money and the food is great…old fashioned, homestyle Spanish cooking without all the fancy trimmings. The Sardinas are fantastic….best I have had this side of Cadiz !. The owner is a charming Canario who makes sure everybody leaves happy !

Have you tried other Spanish places in Fitzroy? The others on Johnston St for example?
