This kebab shop on the corner of Greeves St and Smith St received a minor refit a few months ago, so I was surprised to see it closed and being renovated again last week. How many makeovers does a kebab shop need?

My guess is that it’s recently changed hands – the previous owner did it up to get a better price and now the new owner is putting his/her own stamp on it.

I suppose so, though I do wonder about some places that undergo repeated change. When the SOS restaurant closed in Melbourne, the interior was refitted before the same owner opened the 100 Mile Cafe in the same space. There was nothing wrong with the furniture and fittings from SOS but they were replaced, and with no effect. 100 Mile Cafe failed too. I see in some examples of this kind of change evidence that the business owners don’t know what to change to make a place work. As has been discussed previously, some spaces simply don’t work.
