peeking in the window

At 83 Brunswick St, one of the seemingly empty terrace shops has started teasing people walking past with signs of life. The curtain is drawn back to reveal a table in the window and a sign for ‘The Penny Rose Boutique’, which stocks hand made olive oil and skin care products.

These photos were taken on 21 February, when the sign on the door said ‘closed: reopen next week with new stuff’. Hopefully the facade will receive some patching and paint!

Hi Zoe, can you tell us more about the shop, why you chose to do what you’re doing and why you chose your location on Brunswick St?

The Penny Rose Boutique officially opened on Valentines Day 09 it started as a Garage Sale as we had heaps of stuff we had to get rid of, then by popular demand we decided to stay open. We are open Mon, Thurs, Sat 11-4 or by appointment. Making Pro-Organic skincare products basically came from my frustration in not being able to find these products in stores, and I believe there is a real market especially in this area for the kind of thing we are doing.
I guess I turned my passion and knowledge of all these things I am interested into a reality. A Boutique Shop on the illustrious Brunswick St and people have really appreciated us for it, and we appreciate them. I chose Brunswick St well because it’s Brunswick St. I literally woke up one morning and said to Dave “let’s open a shop on Brunswick St”. The Gertrude St End, well that’s all we could afford at the time, it defiantly wasn’t easy getting the place or living here in the beginning but we love it up here now, things are great.

But keep an Eye Out, It’s going to turn into a small Tea house serving exotic Teas w’ scones and yummy organic treats, homemade chutneys jams etc and by night a Private Restaurant serving slow cooked Food from the Caribbean, especially Haitian & Jamaican food where I’m from, with acoustic soul sung by the lovely Nadee. All by the open fire amongst the herb filled open courtyard out the back.
We plan to move the majority of our Skincare sales online when this happens.

Feel free to come past for a chat.

    Peace
