old Dabs and graffiti ethics

This old Dabs piece on Smith St is starting to look rather scruffy, and it would be great to see it refreshed. Dabs does some extremely colourful work that people enjoy. Being tagged between the eyes doesn’t help. Did someone mention something about graffiti ethics?

I see tagging as very different from graffiti – far more ego-driven and largely lacking in respect for those outside their rather insular tribe

Tagging is over-grown 4 yr olds bragging how they’ve mastered shaping and joining their letters; no style, no flair, nothing original, no talent.

Ethics and tagging? Tagging is about as ethical and selfish as arson, it should maybe be reclassified as a mental condition, one that’s linked to having an IQ of about 50, rubbish parenting and the artistic ability of a drugged chimpanzee with a crayon.

They’re a constantly annoying blight on our urban landscape and need to be shot/tazered/pepper sprayed on sight :-)

I urge my fellow art/architecture loving citizens to call the cops immediately if you do come across these little shits in action. They normally lurk under the cover of darkness, wear particularly stupid hats, enjoy social chroming, have angry, ugly suppurating skin problems, a barely functional grasp of the English language and normally do their dirty work in pairs so they can run off in opposite directions if the cops or angry building owners appear.

Geez, I’m starting to sound like an angry Brian!

This has become such a big topic, with very strong opinions against tagging. It seems the only people who like tags are those that make them!

You should really meet some ‘taggers’ Davy, I think you will be surprised by what you learn. People of all ages and of different socioeconomic backgrounds are involved. Your wildly over the top and incorrect assertions are funny though.
Having said that, you should say some of that stuff to ‘taggers’ when you catch them and with any luck they will knock ya block off.

By the way, I am also a lover of good architecture and work in the art’s industry

If we catch someone vandalising our property that is exactly what we may do.

Tres watch your back!!! I know you are one of those incessant scum bags who like to tag private property. How would you like it if we all started tagging your artwork (pieces). Your time will come, you have no respect and you don’t deserve any in return. Watch out!!!!!

I have to agree. Demonstrating a partial achievement of literacy by learning to spell your own name and then writing it everywhere is perhaps indicative of OCD but not art. No offence to genuine OCD sufferers.

Brian I have to agree. Perhaps if Tres was a home owner he would realise how soul destroying it is to have someone vandalise your property. Something you spend you hard earned on paying off and maintaining. Graffiti has existed prominently in Australia form the early 80’s though back in the day people had respect and it was always taboo to tag private property.
