Fare Share in Abbotsford
Fare Share is a not-for-profit community organisation that rescues surplus food from being disposed of and uses it to prepare meals that are given to charities to feed the hungry and the homeless in Victoria. It’s a fantastic concept because there is no need for anyone to go hungry in Australia.

Industrial food production is so efficient that our society produces a great surplus of food, so much so that we have become lazy and waste some of it. Businesses and individuals often throw away what they don’t need rather than sharing it with those less fortunate. I hate wasting food and would prefer that it is always used for its intended purpose.
Fare Share seeks food donations from businesses to recycle into meals for the needy. I was recently talking to the owner of the Pastry Art Design bakery on Smith St, Collingwood, and told him about Fare Share, which he did not know about previously.

I know about Fare Share because I cycle past their Abbotsford premises every day on my way to work. Their building, which they moved into last year, features some colourful work by Reka, Phibs and Deb.

Pastry Art Design bakery has a two for one sale on Saturday afternoons, when you can get two loaves of good bread for $3.90. I discovered this by accident last year as food shopping after breakfast (about midday) on a Saturday on Smith St has become a part of my weekend routine.

The owner lamented that he hated throwing away what he could not sell, so I recommended Fare Share to him as a better way to dispose of unsold bread. He said he would give them a call. I encourage all food business owners in the City of Yarra area to contact Fare Share to see how they can work together.

Hey if Fare Share had some leaflets I’m sure any number of us would be happy to volunteer to letterbox drop businesses in our local areas, especially in this economic mess.

The best thing to do would be to call them and volunteer!

Fare Share is a wonderful initiative – it’s great that individuals like yourself are helping to get the word about their great work out there. Second Bite is another not for profit doing fabulous work out there saving and distributing food that would otherwise go to landfill.
And yep… volunteering is a great way to help them continue doing their great work… i hope to have some time for that in the very near future.

I love this idea! I’ve often wondered and hoped there was a way that all the food that business waste could be reused and distributed to people who can use it, this is such a great idea.

Yes! I think a lot of food businesses are too busy working to explore this issue more, but I would be encouraged to shop or dine at a place that had a ‘I donate to Fare Share’ sticker in their window. I’m trying to make more Fitzroy food businesses aware of Fare Share.
