Kanela flamenco tapas bar on Johnston St has good tapas and reasonably priced drinks – a bottle of decent Rioja (tempranillo) is only $28. I’ve been there before but not reviewed it so on a recent visit with a new pescetarian friend I managed to take some photos of dinner (but I missed the sardines before they were devoured, and they are as good as the sardines at De Los Santos).

The garlic prawns were quite good (but a little dry or overcooked – perhaps they were frozen, not fresh) and featured lots of chilli. The mushrooms and vegetables in tomato sauce were delicious. I also missed photographing the calamari. The staff appeared nervous after seeing me photographing the food, but they have nothing to worry about: Kanela is a cosy place for a casual dinner midweek (it’s busier when there’s a flamenco show on), and I’m a repeat customer.

Dessert was delicious – flan caramel, which is almost the same as the French creme caramel but, as they say at Kika tapas on Victoria St in Darlinghurst, Sydney, it is “better because is Spanish”.
